Engine turning the wrong way

Hello everyone and thankyou for reading.
I have recently adjusted the timing on my 2ltr Baja bug and have noticed that every time I turn the ignition off, the engine runs on for a few seconds and happends to spin in the opposite direction.
Anyone know what's happenning?I know that with the engine starting without the aid of the starter motor, it may spin either way but its seems to be happening most of the time.

The engine is running on after you switch it off.

It usually happends when its hot and the combustion chamber is hot enough to ignite the fuel air mix without spark from the plugs.

Thats why stock carbs had electric idle jets that turn off when you turn the engine off.

Check your ignition timing, if it is too advanced it can make the problem worse.

I've just got 1 dual throat weber. It also seems to be making a cracking sound.

I occasionally have the same problem in my kombi with the same type of carby. In my case, I suspect that it is running too rich as the spark plugs are covered in carbon. The carbon build up can cause running on as it heats up and acts as a glow plug.

And the fact that it's running backwards sometimes just means that the hot-spot inside the cylinder(s) is lighting the fuel before it reaches TDC, so the piston gets pushed back down - the wrong way.

Running rich can certainly cause it - carbon builds up in the heads space and acts as a glow plug.

A tired engine which burns oil also has more tendency to run on too - a burnt-oil built up in the head space.


Even using too-hot plugs can cause it (though this is less likely).

My engine was originally built leaded fuel. My mechanic said its somthing I'll have to live with.

Change your mechanic!

Every VW ever sold in Aus can run on unleaded fuel - even the earlier ones with the "less hard" valve seats.

What I meant by "unleaded fuel" is the compression ratio was built for unleaded fuel.

I have a similar problem, we run unleaded on our 1600 with a fuel catalyst, and occasionally she keeps running after we turn her off. We were told by a mechanic to try upping the octane level of the fuel, or use leaded every three or four tanks, and this does stop it, although with the new lead replacemen petrol, we use an octane booster (sparingly) and she runs fine.
