dirty drum linings
oval TOFU - April 5th, 2005 at 02:32 PM

Would they still be ok to use if they were contaminated by grease or even brake fluid? My car has been sitting for a year and the brakes seized onto the drum because of the grease/brake fluid... looks as if the crap may have been absorbed through the lining.

If I can clean them, what should I use? I have some powdered stuff (similar to caustic soda) that is used to clean fat traps on exhaust fans for grills/stoves.. will that do?

cook em up on you neighbours bbq & watch the oil, grease & brake fluid bleed out. haha.

Replace them as you will never get them really clean and safe again. Costs about $35

Brakecleen, then sand them lightly.
Rinse and repeat.
If they are really soaked you are out of luck.

Not so!!
This sounds like a suss method but works perfectly.

Grab an old coffe or Milo tin or perhaps an old saucepan big enough to hold the shoes.
Fill it with water and chuck in the shoes.
Make sure they are completely submerged in the water.
Add heaps of detergent or washing powder, like lots of it.
Stick the tin/saucepan onto a hotplate and boil away.
Keep topping up the water as it boils away.
Do this for at least an hour.

Brake shoes will come out looking like brand new with no effects from the oil.

Dont worry about the heat, the shoes will get plenty hotter than this when hard braking.

lol...okay! Reckon that might work...

68AutoBug - April 5th, 2005 at 10:57 PM

Nothing to loose....

I only know of BRAKLEEN .....

Never actually used it.... but I know Mechanics do use it...

I suppose the lining are porous.....

the fluid is soaked in & boiled out... Makes sense to Me...

I wouldn't like to do it inside on the stove though...

It may give out some horrible fumes or smells....
when cooking :):)

not to mention get you banned from the kitchen for a year.........hmmm that could be a good thing.;)

oval TOFU - April 6th, 2005 at 12:26 AM

hmmmmmmmm... I'll give this caustic soda thing a try first, then the brake boiler, then the Brakekleen (if I can find it at the shops - Autobahn? Repco?)

Cheers fellas - great advices ;)

VWCOOL - April 6th, 2005 at 07:41 AM

yeah or you could quit f-en around wasting money on Drain-o and soap and spend $35 on new brakes... ;)

helterskelter400 - April 6th, 2005 at 09:07 AM

as i said before, if you want to go the tight arse tuesday method, bung them on your neighbours bbq. the rubbish just bleeds out when they get hot.

Chewy - April 6th, 2005 at 09:28 AM

I dont think you will ever get them truly back to normal, and with something as important as brakes its not worth it for $35

I've tried burning, boiling, baking, caustic, sanding, baking soda, you name it on MTB disc pads and never brought them back fully.

oval TOFU - April 6th, 2005 at 02:41 PM

OK you ba$tard$ ;) The jury has spoken, I'll just get new pads....

:)

What if it's brake fluid? is that worse than grease (runs for cover)?

helterskelter400 - April 6th, 2005 at 03:32 PM

ok then, as an experiment, but a set of newies AND, with the oldies, dont use your neighbours bbq, use an old plow disc to cook em up. this is what i did with an old set and they worked exactly as good as the new set that replaced them later on. whatever the case they are as useless as each other after crossing deep water...

Soak them in kerosene and set them alight. Thats what the Muir book says. Better still mate get them re-lined.
