Engine & gearbox removal from Kombi
country dubber - April 6th, 2005 at 08:21 AM

The manual (1979 Kombi) I have says when removing the gear box remove the engine and gearbox as one unit.

As I am doing this on my own, I would have thought to remove the engine first just from a weight point of view.

Which is easier?

If you have a decent sized floorjack and enough flat concrete then it is easy enough to do by yourself....just make sure you put the jack under the engine but close to the gearbox end to balance the weight.

Gday Graham,

Regarding the 1600 Kombi gear box you have in your bus, does it go in place of the 2 ltr box with out any modifications to the mounts or gear change linkages?

My Kombi was auto when I got it, and I'm not sure what parts I used when I converted it to Manual, but I have changed from a 1600 Box in 72TWINCAB's to a 2L and we had to shorten the gearshift linkage, so I'd guess if you went from 2L to 1600 you'd probably have to lengthen the gearshift linkage about 20-30mm. The mounts should line right up.

I don't think the weight issue is a big problem. I took the engine and gearbox out as a unit with only a trolley jack and a scissor type jack. If you do take them out as a unit you will find that you need to lower the engine end a bit to allow the gear selector shaft to clear the beam it sits over. After you've lowered the engine push the kombi forward a couple of inches (with the gearbox supported). You can then lower the gearbox end.
