Identifying a vw Beetle 1500 to get its chassis/floorpan to build a GS Limo...
bajachris88 - April 8th, 2005 at 08:44 PM

Hi, my name is Chris.

I am very interested in building a GS Limo Sportsman beach buggy. However, I haven't had much experience with Volkwagen Beetles before (Being only 16 and haven't even got my driver's licence yet).

So, I really need some help.

The buggy kit requires a VW Beetle 1500 floor pan/rolling chassis. However, when
shopping around for a donor VW Beetle 1500 to get that chassis, the
beetles
advertised (like the cheap $500 ones) do not mention the model. It only
shows the year of make. I have found out that the VW Beetle 1500 was
supposably built between 1967 to 1971, but there may have been other
Beetle models built during the same period. So I don't feel confident
in relying
upon that information. So just to be certain that the advertised VW
Beetle is a VW Beetle 1500, I was wondering, what are the distinct
features that
separates the 1500 model from the rest, so I can identify it.

Is there a way to identify that it has a VW Beetle 1500 floorpan/chassis if the
beetle has been modified into a baja or has had other body modifications
or
hasn't got the original engine? (ie: The body is not the original 1500
model, but the chassis is)

Is there any other ways of identification for that Beetle?

ok well chris. im no expert on 1500's. i dont know when they started or stopped making them but i can tell you for your GS limo kit you will need a torsion bar front end on your floorpan so u do not want a superbeetle. super beetles have macpherson strut front suspension. a torsion bar bug will have 2 horisontal bars at the front if u get under the car with support the trailing arms which are connected to the hub/brake assembly. 1500 motors only came out with single port intake manafolds if i remember correctly so u can check that on the engine( only 1 pipe leading to the heads instead of 2 on a twin port) and the beetle should have a 1500 badge on the back. they would also all have 4 stud wheels i beleive instead of the older wide 5 pattern.

Chris,

I have a 1970 Beetle with a good floor that would be perfect to start your project.
It is located at Springwood just near you and I could arrange to move it for you if needed.

$500

Thanks for the reply guys, that helps.

However, Daz 67, I would love to puchase your beetle but because I'm at school fulltime, I got no time to work to earn $500.

The only time I would be able to obtain that cash is at Christmas, when I get heeps of spare time and I have graduated. (I'm currently in year 12 now)

I am currently employed at Byrning Spears, Loganholme, but are you willing to wait that long (That is, till Chrismas when I get the cash)?

Anyways, I will try pestering my parents for the cash, I doubt they would give it to me, but I will try. lol

We are currently planning to renovate our house and we are going to built a large shed at the back. It too may be ready by Christmas, and personally, I would prefer to wait till then when the shed is ready rather than have the beetle sitting out in the weather if I were to purchase it now.

But thanks for the offer. (I'm not rejecting it, but in reaction to the current circumstances, I have not got the cash or room for the beetle as of yet, so it would just have to wait till December [Christmas] if the offer is till available then).

Thanks.

hey Chris

description sounds right, my 69 1500 has a torsion bar front end, swing axles not IRS and 4 stud wheels, hard to go by the motor config as so many get changed, i'm running a 1600 in mine.

if you see a 68/69 advertised it'll probably be the right set up

Thanks. So I suppose its just a matter of looking at those features.

However, do the earlier models (besides the 1500s) have the same features? if so, how do you tell them apart?

check the VIN number under the rear seat stamped on the gearbox tunnel to check the year. use an interpreter such as the one on VWFool's website or the idiots guide to work out which year.

earlier beetles had dodgyer locks and smaller windows.

Thanks fellow aussieveedubbers, I shouldn't have a problem now, especially if I check the VIN number, that should give me the perfect ID of the car.

But still, I should also check for a rear swing axle, no McPherson Struts, Torsion bar front end and if it has 4 stud wheels, then I will have no problem at all.

Thankyou
