Wiper Wiring
phantom - April 12th, 2005 at 09:42 PM

I could use some urgent help from someone in the know, specifically with the wiring setup for a beetle.

I am finishing off a buggy I have recently bought, and the last wiring issue I have to fix (from a long list) is the wipers. I could not make heads or tails of them tonight, compounded by the fact that they are damn awful to get to.

I have even tried to look at my 69 bug to copy the wiring, but I would have to pull it to pieces to have a good look, and would probably stuff it too.

Can someone please give me some guidance on the wiring setup? I have consilted wiring diagrams but due to the buggy being an unknown year, I found differing setups and that made it worse.

I have tried to read the numbers off the connections to join the wires this way and can't go by numbers, so if anyone can help, you'll need to identify each individual connection.

What I have is this:

- Wiper Motor - 5 connections - a set of 2 (one above other), and 3 seperate connections. 4 wires off 4 connections - Brown, Black, Black with yellow, Black with Grey.

- Wiper Switch - Large black 'plug' at bottom, 2 connections (one above other) on LHS, single connection (flat) in middle, single connection on RHS, then 2 connections beside eachother under that. Total 6 connections. One connection (say 9 oclock position) has a wire going to earth, no other wires connected.

If anyone can please help with wiring, I'd be hugely appreciative, and buy you a beer when you are next in town.

OK, I'll work on something simpler. I am assuming I should have one power lead from the fusebox, to the switch, that will supply current with ignition? If I set this wire up I can then try and work out where it supplies current to. The wiper arms (motor) don't get their own seperate supply of power from anything other than the switch, do they?

Looks the same as Type 3 two speed.BY to 53b B to 53 BPU to53a and br to 31b. A live to 30 on switch. Maybe a help.

do a google search, goto type2.com, check the bosch site

I have seen a list of the numbers and they are a bosch standard. Makes it heaps easier

I can't go by the numbers....I have wiring diagrams with me but can't use them as I can't physically make out any numbers on the actual items. All I have are physical connections. Worked on them again tonight and all I have done is blow 8 fuses.

Here is a picture of the wiper switch (6 connectors):

And here is the wiper motor, bad shot I know, but it isn't easy to photograph. 5 connectors, 4 seem to have original VW wires:

Houston, we have wipers!

After pulling my beetle apart earlier tonight and tracing the wiring, I copied it in the buggy and still killed many fuses. Then, I read todays posts on here, put it all together, and found that I had got most of the wires right but stuffed the power and earth wires.

I ran over it all with the correct live / earth, and off went the wipers! No fuses blowing or anything!

Mind you, I didn't get them working until 12.15 am Friday morning (a half hour ago).

Thanks to all who had a hand in giving me information, particularly lexm and Dallan......and also thanks to the U2U's supporting my fight!

All those people who will be doing wipers in the future (2 speed types), I'd be copying this info down somewhere!

Just for the record, I lost 23 fuses while fiddling with the wipers, must be a record?

Thanks again...you're all wonderful.....
