Can't find the drain plug
LittleRalph - February 16th, 2003 at 03:39 PM

Just got a '74 L 1300. Great little beast. Went to change the oil and give a general service but found a problem. There is no drain plug in the middle of the oil strainer cover plate. Every other dub I owned had one there. All the workshop manuals I have (3) all show the drain plug there.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Some have them some don't. Just get another base plate and change it over. Mean while get your 10mm ratchet out .....

That was VW's way of making people pull the base plate off and giving the gause a clean and change the gasket.
Does have its benefits.

why do you want to take the drain plug out? Just remove the whole strainer. Thats why they arent in all of them. they arent needed. Unless you overfill with fresh oil.

Thanks for all the input. Thought it might be to force you to clean the strainer at each oil change. Could be a tad messier getting the old oil out.

Think I'll find one at the wreckers as suggested.

All my problems are so easily solved here. Thanks again.
