bang for buck - anyone ?

howdy tech talkers..

i'd like all of your opinions on bang for buck..

i have a spare engine, i believe it is a 1600, im not sure wether it is a twin or single port - i havnt seen it for a while as it's at my cousins place. it was recoed 12,000 miles ago and apparently ran pretty well im also running a stock 1600 TP

i would like to give this spare engine a bit more "go" whilst not going overboard as it'll be mated with a semi-automatic transmission

my cousin was talking about a cam, and carbies..

now im also limied to a single carb setup as the semi-auto trans blocks the way for a dual carb setup - and im not keep to go relocating bits and pieces..

whats a cam, what is the difference between an optimised cam and a stock one, whats a nice and easy carb (low cost is always enjoyed) that requires almost as little maintenance as my solex. that will give me a bit of right foot power?

I don't know anything too tech, but i've got a single 44IDF and a set of extractors on my ride and it made a decent difference and was easy to mod. If you want to come for a ride or take a spin in my ride it's no problem. I've read in various places that going over 1776cc with middle of the road performance upgrades is as much as a stock semi-auto will take... I'm sure it's a lot to do with how you drive as well.
