Type 2 Mufflers
dusto81 - May 5th, 2005 at 04:53 PM

G'day Everyone,
I was looking at various mufflers for a type 2 bus engine and was wondering if anyone has had experience with different types? I've checked out some of the G.T exhausts but wondering if actually helps exhaust flow much? Also there is the type that has 1 big port and instead of 2 either side and is meant to get alot better vaccuum like suction and is quieter. And then there's all the various extractor type mufflers.... Anyways if anybody has had experience with different types please put down your 2 cents.
Cheers,
Dustin

This has been debated at length before, do a search on the topic. Most agree that you’ll lose some low end torque with an aftermarket muffler if your engine is other ways stock.

But there are interesting options for non stock engines. Like this:

Dustin,

You should be aware that whatever exhaust you select should have the tailpipe(s) sticking out to the side like the stock design. I've been told that he reason for this is that if you have the exhaust straight out the back it can be sucked into the cabin.

Sorry about the slow reply. Interesting site Bus914 but a little expensive for me. That exhaust you've got the pic of looks awesome! Do you have that on your bus or are you selling it? I wouldn't mind eliminating the heater boxes as that system does. I did a bit of a search but couldn't find any real relevant topics on bus mufflers.
If anyone's had some eperience with any different mufflers I'd love to hear about it.
MnsKombi how does the exhaust get sucked back into the cabin? Most of the systems I've seen tend to have the tail pipe out the side except for some of the GT type ones. Anyways I'll go do a bit more research.
Cheers,
Dustin

As I understand it, a moving kombi creates a negative pressure area at the back which traps the exhaust if it comes straight out the back. How it gets in from there I don't know, unless you've got poor seals.

A few years back i got a second-hand standard exhaust from some tosser in Cairns who painted it in non-temp paint! so heading up the Atherton tablelands the paint started burning off something shocking we both almost threw up from the fumes, :puke and kept stopping to let her cool - whether windows were up or down made no difference, and all my rubbers were A1! it was a bloody nightmare - spent an hour scraping it all off with thinners and a wire bruch at Atherton and all was good!
I cant explain it but the fumes easily entered the cabin of the bay - negative pressure is right!

It can get in through the heater. The heat exchangers are on the outside of the exhaust and also has air from the engine bay blown over them. From there it can get into the cabin.

yeh that seems to make a fair bit of sense
