What is an AS41 case
57kombi - May 9th, 2005 at 04:04 PM

Just wondering what this means.
Is it a standard case and how do you decifer the code.
Does the 41 mean anything??

Cheers
Dave

From the ASM Metals Handbook, V.2, 10th edition, 1990

Room Temperature properties:

AS21
1.7% Al
0.4% Mn
1.1% Si
240 MPa Tensile Strength
130 MPa Tensile Yield Strength
130 MPa Compressive Yield Strength

AS41
4.3% Al
0.35% Mn
1.0% Si
220 MPa Tensile Strength
150 MPa Tensile Yield Strength
150 MPa Compressive Yield Strength

AS41 generally considered the 'better' case because
of the higher aluminium content (all dual relief too).

Thanks Rob.

Now I know what I've got.

Cheers

ummm... have i been wrong all these years :jesus

I "thought" AS21 was the high alum case

I "thought" AS 41 was the garden variety

looks like you were bizarre.

1.7% for as21 and 4.3% for as41....hmm. thats gotta suck. did u buy the wrong one at anytime? HAHAH

VWFOOL - May 9th, 2005 at 05:33 PM

how do u know which one u hav, is it stamped anywhere?

Bizarre - May 9th, 2005 at 05:40 PM

This is what i meant

"FI Beetle engines (`75 and later) don't have any provision for a mechanical fuel pump but the alloy they're made of (AS21) is better than the original AS41 and a close second IMO to the AS41 used on new cases"

http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=77732&highlight=as21

and

http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=79610&highlight=as21

here are some more points
http://www.shoptalkforums.com/search.php?mode=results

The first 1600 case was AS41
Then the AS 21 came out in 75 - ish but doesnt have provision for a mech fuel pump and was always considered a "better" case. It was "stronger" - i thought that meant more Al

Apparently the new cases are designated AS41 - but made of AS41A.
I dont know if there is a difference between AS41 and AS41A

What i am saying is i will bet pounds to a pig the AS41 Dave has is a garden variety AS41 from the early 70's and i would have the AS21 anyday over that

it is stamped under the pushrod tubes on one of the sides - driver i think

BajaChris - May 9th, 2005 at 07:03 PM

This is from a web page I found a while ago.

Quote:

On the side of the case, you will see the letters "AS-41" or "AS-21" The AS-41 was the first ones made. In 1975 and later fuel injected engines (the ones without a fuel pump hole), the case alloy was change and the letter was AS-21. The AS-21 is better then the AS-41. BUT now VW in Brazil has changed again and went to the AS-41 again, but it is of a different alloy then the older AS-41 and AS-21 and is better than both.

It seems that the AS-21 is the better case unless you have a new brazilian case.

koolkarmakombi - May 9th, 2005 at 07:05 PM

so that percent adds up to 5.65%

whats the rest?

BajaChris - May 9th, 2005 at 07:08 PM

magnesium

Bizarre - May 9th, 2005 at 07:34 PM

From the ASM Metals Handbook, V.2, 10th edition, 1990

Room Temperature properties (Al=Aluminum, Mn=Magnesium, Si=Silicon):

AS21:

1.7% Al
.4% Mn
1.1% Si
240 MPa Tensile Strength
130 MPa Tensile Yield Strength
130 MPa Compressive Yield Strength

AS41A:

4.3% Al
.35% Mn
1.0% Si
220 MPa Tensile Strength
150 MPa Tensile Yield Strength
150 MPa Compressive Yield Strength

That is the same table as Rob's but it is AS41A - i wonder if Rob missed the A

Where is Wes when ya want him???

Wes....Wes....where are you......WES!!!

splitbusaustralia - May 9th, 2005 at 08:03 PM

sorry! - that is correct the 1990 figures are the 'late' (dual relief) AS41(A) cases!

Sorry Bizarre, but you have it wrong.

Mn is Manganese (the .35% etc)
Mg is magnesium and isn't mentioned in your list, but is of course the main ingredient of the VW case, whether it's an AS21 or AS41 case.
