Noisey Shroud
kickatinalong - May 12th, 2005 at 09:36 PM

I have a 1970 - 1300 Beetle. On infrequent occassions for a few seconds a slight grinding - rubbing noise comes out of the fan shroud and then goes away. I have adjusted the shims (8 of them) on the Generator / Fan Belt pulley and it goes away for about a month then the noise returns.

Today, I hit a slight bump on the road, (road works), at about 30kph. A grinding noise started to come out of the shroud again - really loud. This has only happened once 12 months ago when a new belt was installed and the problem went away.

Today I put another belt on with the same recommended tension as the belt I used previously and the problem went away. However, when I slow down from revs I hear a whirring noise from the engine.

Any suggestions what the problem is and how to fix it?

John

try taking the fan belt off and spinning the generator pulley to see if it is still there. if it is its most likely the bearings in the generator

Its the fan scraping inside your shroud, take the fanbelt off and spin your generator and then gently push on your shroud you will probably hear it,if you do move the shroud to make the noise go away then tighten up the screws that hold the shroud on because there loose, cheers :thumb

Thanks,

the generator has been given a clean bill of health so I will check the shrouds bolts etc and see if they are loose and get back to you.

I hope that it a simple fix.
