Hard to start when hot and sits for 5 to 10 mins. It is a 1973 super bug when cold starts first time every time but after it gets hot some times you
have to crank it and crank it.
I have checked the soilined on the cabbie and is working to cut off the fuel when inigition is off.
Freash out of ideas thankfull of any possible fix for this.
Regards Xdrian
leave the deck lid open after you stop the car to cool off the engine a bit. If it starts again after 5 - 10 mins... i'd say it was vapour-lock. Dont know what you can do to fix it - hood-jax perhaps?
Yeah my kombi also does the same thing!!!
sounds familiar my 63 bug wiyh twin port 1600 does the same thing, extra fun when the battery dies too,
My kombi does the same
fuel evaporation?
i had the same problem recently with my 63 bug, drive it for a while and it would run good, the turn her off,try to turn back on and it jsut wouldt kick, from what my dad told me it was the fuel vapourising and wat u need to do take your fuel cap off the tank to let air in,and it should usually work, which it did for me,also you may have a faulty fuel pump,i got mine replaced and have not had any problems with starting when shes running hot at all, also sheck your point, they may have closed up and need re setting? isaac
My kombi has started doing it recently too. Fine when cold, but won't start straight away after turning it off.
has it always done this???
or just started??
Should not be vapour if a non modified 73 super - they have vented tanks.
You 100% your valves and timing are right???
If your fuel pump gets too hot the fuel may be vaporising, and vapour won't be pumped adequately. Hence, no fuel to engine. While driving, there
should be enough airflow to stop the pump heating up, but once you stop, the heat seeps out from the case/heads to parts like the fuel pump, which
then heats up further. Hence, after a short while, the pump is hot and won't work properly. Later on, it's cooled off a little and all's good
again.
What you can do is hold a wet rag or something on the pump to cool it off. Maybe blow on it - hmmm, I don't know about that actually, 'd look kinda
funny hey. Careful, there's lots of hot stuff there. I've done this on my bus, trying to sort out a very weird and as yet unidentified problem.
Anyway, perhaps give that a go. It's a theory anyway. Dude in Canberra at a reputable VW place told me about the wet rag.
Cheers, good luck, Aurel.
i sometimes get this if ive been cruising at 110 on a hot day but i found if i let it idle for a couple of minutes, and it fixes it
Provided your not over heating, and other things are in order (valves/ignition/fuel pump etc) this is a common problem with stock solex carbs.
I have this on all my air cooled VW's (2L kombi, 1600 type 3 and beetle) all with stock carbs.
What I have found is once you turn off, the fuel in the float bowl heats up and the level rises as the fuel expands, it then drips out the main jet
into the throat of the carb. Take the air cleaner off one day as soon as you've stop and see it this is happening.
What this does is it floods the motor. The best way to start with this situation is to crank motor and very slowly give it throttle until it starts.
Definitely don't pump the throttle. I find it usually starts after ~5 sec of cranking.
I find this is only an issue if you have driven more than ~20min (motor well and truely warmed up) and you try to re-start ~5min-20min after stopping.
It's also worse if you park with the nose up hill.
Not sure if this is your issue, but one other thing to consider.
Must be a common problem Vern does it too !
Can be very embarrasing at the petrol station.......makes him look like a heap of shit
