newbie sort of questions...and funny story about first day of kombi back on the...

What brand of leads are people using on VW's.? specifically 1800's...? (see, I am a newbie!)
How about motor oil? what are people using? (damn proud newbie, wants to do the best for his beloved kombi).

Now for the story:
For the last few months been doing the usual sorts of backyard resto things... Pop top coming off was one thing (had to stop the rust...) anyhow, the secondhand engine went in a few days ago, (no probs, thanks going out to Terry from Custom Off road in QLD), so being an eager little beaver, I was just icthing to take er for a drive. So I did, massive hole in roof, worlds biggest sunroof.....!
The next thing I know, I've come across a random breath test, ok, cool, no probs, I had finished my 2nd schooner of homebrew about 20 minutes prior, so should be ok, hopefully, maybe, shit?.
the officer was kind enough to point out that my rego sticker was out of date! doh! "mate, are you sure this things registered?"......" Yes., officer..ummmm, I was just picking up my mate, so he could help put the roof back on.."
"OK, sure, could you just blow into this tube please!"
Thankfully, I wasn't over the limit, thankfully I had my license on me, thankfully the rego check came back ok.
Unfortunately my mate wasn't home, so the roof didn't go back on, however, seeing how the police let me go, I'm thinkin, maybe the pop top can stay off for a while, it definately turns a few heads!
;)
Cheers Craig.

I knew I should have just done a search for my questions...
So Castrol GTX 2 seems to have a bit of a following....
I should also use copper core leads??

Good on you mate. My wife and I are traveling around Oz in our 2liter kombi which we bought is a shite state. I have been doing all sorts of things to it from full recon motor (bought) to new dual battery set up and getting everything electrical redone to make it work. If i can help drop me a u2u and I will see what I can do. I am in Box hill, Melbourne for three months to make money so might see you around the roads

Congrats on going for the resto. I'd love to do that to my almost-rat/shed-on-wheels kombi. First it needs to run again.

I like the no-roof look. Wasn't there an old canvas top style thing for the splitties that basically left a hole when it's pulled back?

With leads your best off using the proper VW leads. You can get them from most VW shops.

Thanks guys, I was beginning to think that no one was going to bother with replys....

Its hard being a newbie, everybody is too quick to dismiss some basic questions. U need to start somewhere, so any help is most valuable.

Cheers Craig.
