nicko - June 1st, 2005 at 09:07 AM

What is the size of the driver needed to take out the socket head screws on the cvs on a bay window bus? I need to get one as none of my allen keys fit.

They are a star spline arent they???

nicko - June 1st, 2005 at 09:58 AM

They are slightly bigger than 6mm but slightly smaller than a 1/4 allen key. Hoping to get an exact size so I can get a tool shop to order on in. I dont think they will have to match as a sample. Couldnt find it on the camper site but it is a nice looking site

YES!!
Most CV bolts are the spline or "double hex" type. Look in the head of the bolt, if it has 6 sides it's a 6mm alen key, if not it will have 12 points and needs a spline tool.

Repco and tool companies will have them, the $2 auto shops and department stores are not likely to.

Get the right tool for the job, a 6mm alen key does fit in the spline bolts, but if you strip them your knackered.
;)

I second what Rhys said, and add that it's worth applying your favourite penetrating oil the night before you have a go at them.

The ones on our bus are 12 spline also

baybuscamperkid - June 1st, 2005 at 04:48 PM

mine are allen key, found that one per wheel seems to have a slightly larger hole in it, also found that good quality allen keys will fit even if cheapo's feel loose

kombi_kid - June 1st, 2005 at 04:53 PM

get the allen key hat will go onto your 1/2" drive socket!! even better me reckons!
you cn never have enough penetrating oil i sometimes drink it if my bones are aching!! frees them up straight away!
cheers

get a good quality bit. Trust me. Sometimes you need a lot of force to undo them. And then there's doing up. For some reason mine always undo themselves...

I don't remember. I'll have to look. I have the big semicircle dealies but I'm not sure if they have their own ones.

helbus - June 6th, 2005 at 11:03 PM

When I took ours ou the other day, they had 12 spline on the gearbox end and hex on the wheel end. The 12 spline I tapped the spline bit in with a hammer, and used a 8mm spanner to 'crack' the bolt. They are very tight and it is the tension of the torque they are done up to that makes them hard to undo.

They also had small serrated washers under the heads to stop them coming loose.

Hi

Kombi used 6mm single hex, Beetles & Type 3s used 6mm double hex, I always scratch the hole out with a screwdriver, then give 1/2 drive tool a tap with a hammer to make sure that its seated properly.

I'll check that when I pull out the battery. Should be able to see them without cracking the bolts off.

I thought they were 8mm multihex for the bolts. I don't remember anymore. Just about every VW I have worked on is an oddbod.
