heavy stearing on kombi

Ok now we have a problem with heavy stearing. is there anything i can do to make the stearing lighter. it is currently running 175/65R14 tyres on 14 inch rims. would running standard rims make the stearing lighter and has anyone ever put power stearing into a kombi with a 2lt motor.

ah a kombi thing u come to know and love na it shouldnt be that heavy! have a look at ya sterring box for leask,ya condition of your tie rod ends etc!

Make sure your tyre pressures are correct and also grease all the grease nipples on your front end. This should help.

The tie rod ends are a good start as we have two out of the four on ourr bus that need replacing and the steering is very heavy.

I thought I better do something about this after thinking about it and I bought the two adjustable tie rod ends German made at $30 each and I am waiting for the fixed tied rod bar to come in. It is the RH side one that has no adjustment.

So to do all four, you need two adjustable ends and 1 fixed tie rod which has the other two ends on it. I dont have a price yet.

As we are keeping the bus I am only getting German stuff.

also check wheel alignment. ie, too much toe in/out

you can use the adjustable tie rod on the p/s(fixed rod) i did this as it allows for more precise wheel alignment i reacon!! my appolise the tie rod ends are $16.40

Lots of things can affect this including:

Incorrect wheel offset with aftermarket wheels.
Incorrect wheel alignment (read a manual it's an involved process best done buy an expert VW shop)
related to wheel alignment in wheel camber (same deal as above)
Weight over front axle (T2 kombi's don't like that)
Also as stated above tyre pressures and the whole steering system condition (steering box needs oil) tierods, ball joints etc. Have you greased the steering pin in the centre of the front suspension?
Also stock tyres are best (but yours are near enough I guess).
