has anyone had some experience on the cost and parts availability of rebuilding either the 1.9 or 2.1 water cooled kombi motors?
is this a better option than an EA81 Subaru conversion?
Oh boy - THIS will be interesting!
As far as i know the water cooled VW flat four would have to be THE most expensive of the clan to rebuild.
Hoses are like $1500 a set.
Bearings........ dont talk about bearings......
Heads.....hah! you thought bearings were dear!
Oh don't go there.........!
:beer
Heads are like $1800 each !!!!!!!!!!
Dont let these guys scare you off. They are expensive, but.... I dont know exactly ....... but I can tell you who does.
Talk to Kurt Phillips at V-dub repairs and spares in Fremantle, W.A. He has a 2.1 supercharged water boxer in his beetle, and has rebuilt several of
these lately - he will know prices and suppliers for the hard to get bits.
When you do find out, let us all know ?

thanks guys this is what i thought you would all say.
the problem is i dont want a subaru in my VOLKSWAGEN
Then dont put a subaru in the car ...
Do you have to put water cooled in the car ? (think outside the square)
Or perhaps you could stick a rotary in there ... at least then its not a subaru
:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce
no i mean not just subaru i have to keep a vw engine in it. and yes i wanna watercool it
have a look at the SBO site.
James/Supe/Superman has a Golf GTI moptor in his and the lid closes.
Woozy, were did you get your Baja kit. I had one the same 13yrs ago, lights in the nose, have been wanting one ever since !?
hey guys where are you shopping???? we have just rebuilt a 2.1L with new everything including heads for under $3K - talk about horsepower per dollar!!!!! :thumb:thumb:thumb
HAPPY to be proved wrong!
My info is just quoted prices here and there, the internet and various mechanics telling me to stay away when i was fixing Daisy - an air cooled
Vanagon.
Where have YOU been shopping?
The baja kit came with the car ... around 9 years ago i got it in kalgoorlie.
Dunno where you might get another one nowdays tho
and i thought the type 4 engine was expensive
maybe you could try TOOLEY IMPORTS? - you might be surprised!!
