Kombi Box in Baja - which clutch cable?
ratty 63 - June 3rd, 2005 at 02:39 PM

Hi all,

OK, the IRS is now all back together (see other posts) - so I decided to assemble as much of the pan as I can in an effort to make me feel like I am getting somewhere...

... everything went fine - despite the clutch cable being one of the most difficult things to fit on a Beetle. That is until I realised that I would have to move the clutch guide tube and accelerator guide tube so that the cables will clear the back of the Kombi box...no major problem though....

Then I went to connect the clutch cable to the gearbox (just so it wasn't floating around in mid-air)....this is when I realised that the standard Beetle clutch cable isn't long enough any more :( It's about 2 inches too short.

I spent half an hour at the workshop where my Brother works this arvo, comparing clutch cables from various models of VW and I think that a Type III clutch cable will come very close...but I'm not certain.

So, those of you who have done this conversion, what clutch cable do you use? I realise that the cable will be a little closer to fitting once I re-locate the guide tubes, but I still don't believe that it will fit....

Any suggestions?

R :)

Mine seams like it will fit but i have not yet bolted everything down so maybe it won't anyways i heard (if you can't find a stock one) that there is a mob the you can take your cable to and they will crimp n end onto it for you

hmmm, I think I should mod/move the guide tubes in the pan before I go any further with the clutch cable issue.

I'll let you all know what happened once this is done....
