o.k for us backyard mechanics which is the best and most commonly used gearbox oil to use in our rides.cheers.
I use castrol 85/140 diff gearbox oil it works
cheers i wanna see what people ar using gonna fill mine up tommorow so looking to get some advise before i fill it.
85/140 make sure its gl4 NOT gl5 and if you have dodgy syncros or they catch a bit put in a tube of molybond
Why not GL5??
Wish I had read this thread before AI bought some :cussing
apparently it can corrode the bras/bronze bushings etc in ya GB...
85/140? Isn't that a bit thick? anywho, I use 85/90 GL4 stuff... GL4 ain't too easy to find
oops.. thats brass... not bras..
if only.............. (evil pondering......)
What gearboxes are we refering to here? All veedub ones, or just one specific type?
all VW ones i think...
I was at SupaCrap last weekend...its bloody hard to find anything that is rated GL4.

so now that ive just filled my gearbox up with GL5 rated oil before reading this thread should i be freaking out and buying some new stuff?
bump?
in a Type 1 2 or 3 or any other older style gearbox use only 80/90 grade
140 is too heavy
I use fully synthetic mobile, not sure on grade as it was filled when rebuilt.
From one of My 10 VW Workshop manuals...
The Volkswagen differential gears are of the hypoid variety.
Extreme pressure hypoid gear oil must be used because of the high tooth pressures and high rubbing velocities encountered in this type of
gearing....
Care must be taken to see that straight mineral oil is not used in the volkswagen transaxle...
Use Only good quality SAE 90 Hypoid oil....
I'm not sure what I used until I find the plastic container..
I also added a tube of NULON to the gearbox oil....
I presume EP stands for EXTREME Pressure....
I do have a full container of Penrite 85/140 Hypoid Oil...
Its a GL5..... Might use it in My Lancer....
