85/140 make sure its gl4 NOT gl5 and if you have dodgy syncros or they catch a bit put in a tube of molybond

Chewy - June 17th, 2005 at 05:39 PM

Why not GL5??
Wish I had read this thread before AI bought some :cussing

oval TOFU - June 17th, 2005 at 06:05 PM

apparently it can corrode the bras/bronze bushings etc in ya GB...

85/140? Isn't that a bit thick? anywho, I use 85/90 GL4 stuff... GL4 ain't too easy to find

oval TOFU - June 17th, 2005 at 06:06 PM

oops.. thats brass... not bras..

if only.............. (evil pondering......)

bajachris88 - June 17th, 2005 at 06:07 PM

What gearboxes are we refering to here? All veedub ones, or just one specific type?

oval TOFU - June 17th, 2005 at 07:30 PM

Murph - June 17th, 2005 at 08:56 PM

so now that ive just filled my gearbox up with GL5 rated oil before reading this thread should i be freaking out and buying some new stuff?

Anthiron - March 23rd, 2006 at 09:36 PM

bump?

vw54 - March 24th, 2006 at 06:11 AM

in a Type 1 2 or 3 or any other older style gearbox use only 80/90 grade

140 is too heavy

BiX - March 24th, 2006 at 03:09 PM

I use fully synthetic mobile, not sure on grade as it was filled when rebuilt.

From one of My 10 VW Workshop manuals...

The Volkswagen differential gears are of the hypoid variety.

Extreme pressure hypoid gear oil must be used because of the high tooth pressures and high rubbing velocities encountered in this type of gearing....

Care must be taken to see that straight mineral oil is not used in the volkswagen transaxle...
Use Only good quality SAE 90 Hypoid oil....

I'm not sure what I used until I find the plastic container..
I also added a tube of NULON to the gearbox oil....

I presume EP stands for EXTREME Pressure....
I do have a full container of Penrite 85/140 Hypoid Oil...
Its a GL5..... Might use it in My Lancer....
