Black Smoke...
jo_tas - June 9th, 2005 at 11:16 PM

Hi all

Today i was playing with my type three.. (new exhuast, sounds soooo good) and i noticed when i rev it fairly hard, a small puff of black smoke comes out just as it revs... is that normal?
I know black smoke means its too rich.. would that be something to do with the accelerator pump?

Thanks,

-Josie

I don't know what others think, but I think that's pretty normal. My bug did it. Don't remember if the kombi did. How many Kms has your engine done?

new exhausts burn of a bit of protective crud in them from manufacture too. Could be a little bit of that too.

oh ok.. not sure what the mileage on the engine is.. but it doesn't oil and runs smooth when driving.. so i guess i shouldn't worry...

I wouldn't be too worried, but if you had grey smoke that could be a bad sign.

mine smokes under fukk throttle, at low RPM.

When a motor is running quickly the fuel has less time to butn in the combustion chamber. This can result in partially burned fuel coming out the exhaust.

That's what I just came up with anyway.

I thought it was when you dab the throttle, it dumps to much fuel compared to the air going in and the engine runs rich until teh revs and therefore air flow matches the air coming in?

Yeah that would make sense... Could the fuel not be getting burnt properly becuase the spark plugs are old or not good enough?

Usually, if the sparkies are crap and hadit, the engine can be a bit sluggish and gut less (experience from my mum's ford laser lol). And It can even stall. If it doesn't idle nicely, and it seems a bit low on revs or wateva I just mentioned, it could be. Usually u have a recommended date/time that u should replace em (like every couple of months or more or something anyways).

Bad sparkies shouldn't make black smoke, unless their not working at all. Cause u would think, all that is needed is a pee wee of a spark to blow up a squirt of fuel in the combustion chamber. It would have black smoke or even possible fuel spitting out (i would imagine) if one of them wasn't working, and even then, the engine would not seem to act healthy as the piston movement would be out of balanace (1 on one side working, with the other 2 on the other side working, bit of an odd distribution of KE from the explosion)

Did it puff out smoke with ur old exhaust?

what?

Well, I understood it :P

The car runs fine, idles well and plently of power (well, for a VW)

So once again, i probably shouldn't worry. Just curious as to why it does it, becuase i'm sure they weren't designed to blow black smoke, even if it is only a little bit.

bajachris88 - June 10th, 2005 at 08:57 PM

I'm glad u understood. lol :)

Its probably just the engine its self (Just the build, and how it was originally designed. Probably not a malfunction). Perhaps give a call to a vw servicing mob or mechanic (call a few places, so u can get 2nd opinions), and just tell em ur situation and ask for an opinion. Just a couple cents for a phone call, shouldn't be a prob.

I wouldn't be to worried if it performs fine, but give em a call. :)

I have a 1966 VW Beetle running a single port 1600cc motor and with higher revs it tends to fuel up a little if the motor is not under load (free revving), but also i would imagine it would fuel up a little underload in normal driving circumstances (higher revs). I wouldnt be at all concerned. More so take this as re-assurance that it is not running lean and therefore elimating possible risk of burning out a valve.

If you are worried, take it for a spin for 20 minutes. Let it cool and pull a plug out. If it is black/grey and clean from deposits, just enjoy ya ride.
If it has some deposits, throw in some new plugs and re-adjust your fuel air mixtures. Simple.

Then drive and enjoy some more. :thumb
