Hi I have just pulled the gearbox out of a 74 Bay Window Kombi and I were expecting to see an 1800 box - 5 ribs. What come out was a box with 3 ribs.
What have I got?
Also the engine number has an AP prefix. A check of my Bently manual does not identifiy any AP prefix. Any ideas on what size this motor is?
the 3 rib is a 1600 kombi gearbox!! and the engine is a 1800 cc just looked in the idiots guide!
cheers
rhys
Thanks Rhys, I might have to get one of the idiots guides as the Bently one is a bit lacking when it comes to stuff outside the US. At least the motor
is the size I were expecting.

hey nicko george at classic veedub in sydney has them on special this month
Thanks Barls I am going to Sydney this weekend so I might call in for a look at his shop. Just wondering did I speak to you last week at your old mans
shop. I were trying to organise a pink slip for my Bay. I should of introduced myself
Cheers Nicko
The 1600 box is a popular choice for 1800 bays. Mine has one. They don't go quite as quick but they have better pulling power.
yeah i think you did were you the one who couldnt get there till after 4. i was answering the phone some of the time
i was in the same position as u except i had a 2.0L engine. Its a real annoyance. Took us a month or two to track down a 2L gearbox, ended up getting one for $350 in good nick. If your going to be driving on the highway alot then you should try and get a 1800 gearbox otherwise your engine will be reving too hard.
Yeh Barls That was probably me.
I have sold the box and is going into a buggy. My bay has the 1800 box but the motor is stuffed and this motor I have just pulled out will be the
replacemnt
