Hey, has anyone here converted a manual kombi over to a auto? I am thinking about doing this to my 77 kombi which has a 2L motor and box. How hard would this be to do?

Hmm, I went the other way with my 1800. It's probably simpler going from manual to auto. You'd need the tranny, the auto stick assembly, some new wires for the park starter protection ( I think). Not sure if you need new axles. You may also need the auto carbs.
There is some sort of sensor in the bellhousing for the auto motor too. You'd need to put that in somehow.

Do the auto kombis have a shift rod that goes from the T shifter thing all the way back to the box like a manual kombi has? or is it electric?

It's mechanical. I'm not 100% sure but I think it may be the same rod for both manual and auto.

Oh, they both use the same shift tube.

In a type 3 the shifter is a cable that runs down the tunnel then comes out 3/4's of the way to the auto. You should get this when you buy the auto and shifter, in the type3 the drive shafts are different in the auto so you may need them as well. I used the same carbs that were on the engine when it was manual. I am guessing that a Kombi would be the same as you can put a kombi auto into a type 3. Somebody with a kombi may be able to give more detailed info.

Hi I have changed a 75 from manual to auto and back again.
It's not that hard if you have all the parts from the auto. The only thing to watch is how you bolt on the auto stick as on the manual the bolts screw in from the top and on the auto the bolts screw in from the bottom. You also have to remove the front bush that the manual change rod slides in as it gets in the way of the auto change lever. other than that its not hard. James
