How do I get my wing mirror off? The nut above the hinge only moves a bit one way (then it gets tight against the hinge) or a bit the other way (then
it gets tight against the mirror stalk). The mirror stalk can't rotate because the A-pillar gets in the way of the curved top end of the stalk.
Is it a nonstandard mirror?
one i had on a beetle the mirror stork thing turned around on the thread and then came off.. dont kno bout that one tho?
That's what has me confused, h. Normally they can unscrew.
Usually they don't intefere with the door frame and/or A pillar.
If there is no clearance for the mirror to unscrew, there are only 2 ways I can see that the mirror was put on in the first place. EIther;
a) the shaft was bent to get it on
b) the hinge was not attached when the mirror was put in it.
gotta love a good puzzle..
Any chance of a couple more pics? I'd like to see the whole setup.
Undo the nut at the bottom of the hinge. These types of mirrors have a long shaft that goes right thru the hinge with a thread and nut at the bottom. You will find that the mirror stalk will also unscrew off the top nut also.
Thanks guys, there is a nut at the bottom... but if I undo that won't I have to take out the whole hinge pin? And isn't that really difficult?
The mirror is not a stock 1959 mirror, it's kind of rectangular. I've bought a shiny new stock 1959 one which is why I want to get the current one
off.
I think you will find that the stalk goes right thru the centre of the hinge pin. These types of mirrors are different from the german style that screw onto a threaded portion of the hinge pin.
