hey guys. after toying with the idea of a 1915cc turbo vw motor i emailed an engine builder from thesamba called "perf lab". im sure some of you guys have seen their ads.


well i asked them the price for a 1915cc longblock with sufficient mods to handle a injected turbo system.

this is the reply i got via email.

"hi anthony this is vic from perf lab the builder.
for a new 1915 turbo long block with all new internals counterweighted balanced,
with chromoly flywheel, straight cut gears bug pack, scat H beams, sand sealed,
fk 8 cam with scat 1.4 ratio rockers, welded #3,with new heads turbo heads 42X40
mm valves dual springs, titanium retainers, med d port heads your, stainless
steel scat valve covers, and push rod tubes, with 3/8 manton chromoly push rods.
your looking at 3000 for the complete long block, with all brand new internals
specifically built for a turbo set up. with warranty. for the shipping im am
not sure at the moment but I can research for you. what make this application
expensive is the design for the turbo. its some of the components such as 1.4
rockers that must be used with fk8 cam, chromoly hardware, case with welded #3
for reinforcement ect. what you will get is a bullit proof motor.
let me know there is room for negotiation on parts.

The builder is overseas, firstly you will obviously have to get the engine over here which will not be cheap. Secondly if you have any issues or have to contact him it iwill be difficult.

Plus you have to provide the induction system, exhaust and turbo which you will have to fabricate or get someone to fabricate for you. Plus other ancillaries like oil cooler, filter, tinware etc. Not worth it. Unless you enjoy spending lots of time and money organising things overseas. Honestly, just stick with one thing and go with it instead of changing your mind all the time.

it equated to about $5300 landed here in australi (including customs dutys and GST).

i was just wondering if this is a good price as copared to what you can get built over here for the price.

Good value - i doubt it.

On the Samba you see a lot of these adds. Ask on places like Shoptalk and see what sort of response you get.

Aircooled.net sells a 1916 long block for $3600

AC.net sells a LOT of parts so would have volume on his side. How come this other bloke can add a turbo and sell for $600US less.

Add up the parts your self and see what it comes too.

Companies like GEX and others sell these with SEVERLEY cut cases, mis matched P&C's and badly fitting tin etc.

Just remember you get NO warranty on this (like you are going to pack it up and send it back???)

Save your money and spend it here

I don't think hes adding a turbo bizzare its just setup for one

Haveing said that bizzare is right, best to ask around see if his longblocks are good and what problems people have had

yeah it is just a plain longblock. comes with a signed warranty by the guy that builds them himself.

it does make a subie conversion cheap. but end of the day i have always wanted to build a hypo vw motor. and if i was going to go conversion im more of a rota kind-a guy anyway
