LRP Fuel
sdat - June 21st, 2005 at 01:15 PM

I am finding it harder & harder to find local LRP Fuel in service stations these days. Does anybody know if my 1969 beetle with run on straight ULP of PULP? If it won't, can any body recommend a good fuel additive and which type of fuel to mix it with ULP or PULP?

Thank God for that!

Not needed nd not particularly good for your car either.

Do a seach. Been discussed to death.

Quick andswer.
All VWs since 1967 have hardened valve seats. There fore lead is not needed. Just plain old ULP

IF you have a modified or increased compression ratio (say greater than 8:1) then you should use PULP

Use Flash lube if it makes you feel better

I use Premium in my stock bus, and she sometimes pings even with that. Plain unleaded would exacerbate the problem, which has a lot to do with heat.

I reckon go PULP if you can.

Or do a search, as bizarre said, it's been discussed at length.

It shouldn't be pinging. I assume you've checked the timing. Could also be carbon buildup in the cylinders.

Oh she only pings if I don't change down when going up a hill; I noticed it after doing ~85km/h on the freeway for an hour+, then getting to a hill. Changed down then hey! Guess she was warm from the freeway driving. Plugs look OK still. Will check timing, (thanks).

Cheers, Aurel.

I used LRP a few times. Very quickly decided it wasn't for me. My VWs didn't like it either.

Anyway, ULP works but PULP seems to work better. In my experience anyway.

I had the pinging problem too. Fixed it with a timing fiddle to a degree. I'd still get it going up hill sometimes too.

I use PULP in my 69 beetle (1600 sp, non-doghouse). Runs fine. It's OK on ULP but I can make it pink under heavy loads if I don't retard the timing.

Valve clearances have remained fairly steady for the past 13000 miles so I don't think the valves or seats are objecting.

Go for it.
