Pedal Box - PLEASE HELP
andytlr - June 29th, 2005 at 05:07 PM

A couple of days ago I jumped in the car and put my foot on the clutch and I heard this snap noise then the clutch fell to the floor.

Anyway, I figured this was the clutch cable, so I went and bought one then towed my car down to the local mechanic.

I then got a call telling me that the hook had broken off the pedal box. Which I can only assume is what the cable goes onto, and that it was that breaking and not the cable.

Anyway, they have called around a couple of places and I called volkspower, who I found out they had also called. And they were told to find the hook and weld it back on.

They can't find the hook. Has anyone had this happen? Is a new pedal box expensive? Any regular places the hook might have gone to?

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Hi

Vintage in Sydney sell new hooks, they need to be welded on, they can also be made out of a piece of flat steel but it takes bit of time with a file etc.

I broke the hook off my pedal 2 weeks ago, there are some of my threads still in the tech folder. Rather than re-welding a new one, I bought another set of pedals (with a good hook on the clutch), cost me $45 for the set and fitted them myself.

Warning - the pedals can be fiddly to re-fit, but if you take your time and note what you are doing, you should be OK.

Must be something in the air, while I was getting advice from my VW mechanic over the refitting, he had another bug delivered with a broken hook.

should be an easy task for a mechanic or VW nutter.................to weld on a new hook would take about 10mins, the rest of the time would be in removal and refitting. I would think about $100 if you were paying someone.

Well, the mechanic fixed the problem. Can't say I was particularly impressed with the price but it's done now.

You'll be happy in the end now that you can drive around. And that positioning of the pedals can be fiddly....

Oh yeah, they did a great job. Looked everywhere for a new pedal assembly. Found one at an ok price. Just the end price hit me where it hurts a bit, all for a little hook. Oh well, these things happen.
