Cigarette Lighters
lauzboy - July 14th, 2005 at 11:30 PM

Anyone wired up a cigarette lighter in a bug? Where did u position it and how did you wire it up?

Ive got a 71 bug and wanna be able to recharge my phone and other accessories. Its 12V of course

you can buy the plugs(universal) just run it to constant, or ignition power.
im planing on putting one into my 71, probably in place of one of those plastic plugs on the dash, dont know if the hole is the right size yet

I wanna put one in my ride too. This is a cool subject.

they are pretty easy to put in wiring wise... hardest thing i guess is where you wanna put it. simplest is the type that mounts to the bottom of the dash like the extra guages you put in.. just screw the holder to the dash and done. Wiring just needs to go to supply and ground depending upon whether you want it on all the time or just when the engine is running. you can test the fuses to see which is on all the time or just with ignition.

i have a alloy centre consol mounte don the tunnel, so its mounted in the side of that. i wored up a switch (in teh consol) and its own fuse.

BiX, have you got any photos of your centre console? It sounds interesting.

Its really simple, got some 2mm alloy sheet, and bent it in a u shape. then made some eds up for it and got those welded on, our you could bolt them on. For a while is used to be velcro'd to the carpet, but now i have it bolted onto the tunnel.

it sits about 50mm above the top of the tunnel adn the sides come halway down the tunnel. I have a seperate fuse block, and swithes for gauges, spotties, cig lighter etc all on it.

Here is my cig lighter (from wolfsburg west) which is to the right of the ashtray:

All you need is a power feed and then a ground connection.

mostly interested in positioning. i want to keep things as stock as possible (less work really), its got to be secure and quite accessible

wiring really isnt an issue. as someone suggested, maybe one of the plastic plugs on the dash might be ok.

if anyone has pics, lets see em.

cheers!!!

Ooooh. Shiny. Very nice dash DasDubber.

What sort of accessories will you be using? It has some bearing on where you put the accessory socket.
For example, a mobile charger. They tend to only have short cords, and you'll want to have the socket within a cord reach of somewhere to sit the phone.
You also don't want the accessories to be intefering with the shifter or anything else when you are driving.

There should be a few good places to tuck it. Even though in a beetle it's practically impossible to avoid doing it without drilling holes in sheet.

That's a damn fine idea SAS, now I just need a glove box lid to hide it :)
