WHATS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

what are we looking at? Stock type 4 alternator's wiring only goes one way, but where it connects to the voltage regulator can be tricky. Maybe a bit more info on what the pic is of and we may be able to help...
Here is mine for comparison (Type 1 1600):

your set up looks a little different than purple martins but it sort of looks like your wires may be the wrong way around.He also has two red wires attached to what looks like the the closest plug,and one single green wire the same as you.Im sure you will figure it out.
my pic is of a new bosh alternator on a 71 superbug. im guessing setup is:
the brown wire is earth, the green one goes to the geni warning light, the big red one goes to battery or starter motor? is this right?
Its called an auto electrician M8.

...same alt as I use...
The thick wire (that goes to the battery) should be attached to the terminal closest to the camera (in the shot above) and the warning light wire
attaches to the terminal that is further away.
These are an internally regulated Alt. so no voltage reg is required...

Its not clear in your post, is this new instalation? If not what have you done under the back seat with old generator wiring?

its a new instalation I dont think he has done anything with the regulator that is under his rear seat.Should there have been any changes he will be
stoked with the replies guys.And stuff auto electrician on a beetle wiring im sure the guys on here know more than my local auto electrician about
vw...
thanks for your help guys, i have changed the wires around so as they are on the right terminals now. we tried jumping the alt light wire (green) to
coil power, this made the light go out when motor is running, but seemed to put a lot more load on battery. am recharging battery now and willtry
again later.
Martin, do you know where the second red wire leads to?
Ratty63, did you have to disconnect the old regulator, or just run the old wires as they were?

Battery is charged, i tried the same set up as yesterday (a jumper wire from +coil to the green wire on alternator) the green wire started to melt.
Wires melt if they have way too much current flowing through them. This is dangerous and can cause a fire! You must still have it wired
incorrectly.
The second red wire (the one on the right in my pic) goes into a black sheath that is part of the wiring harness. From there... who knows?

OK, from a combination of the site mountainbug found and the wiring diagrams on The Samba we can work out what the wires do!
The green wire goes to the dash warning light (we already knew that)
The red wire on the left of my pic goes to the fusebox and ignition
The red wire on the right of my pic goes to the battery.
How do I know which red wire is which? Because it makes sense for the one that goes to the front of the car to follow the same wiring duct as the
green wire to the warning light. Therefore the other one must go to the battery.

thanks guys, im gonna try removing the blue and green wires from old regulator and splice them (as directed in rob and daves volks pages for "using alt with internal reg") the green wire is frazzled all the way from old reg to engine bay, so will have to be replaced, what a bitch
WORKING!:bounce. i have bandaged up the frazled green wire, pulling out the back end loom to replace the green wire can happen later. took off green
and blue wires from old regulator (under back seat on left) and joined them together.
here are pics for anyone else who might be looking for this info in the future.

Hey Akean, You forgot to metion you were running a spare regulator. A definate no no. Glad to see its not buggered.
I'm glad to see You have sorted it out....
I love that alternator clamp You have used....
I haven't seen one like that before.....
Is it specially made for the alternator??
You can give the old regulator away to someone for a spare....

hey lee i got that clamp from george at classic vee dub (part no. cvd-165161 )
yep - that will do it
The new Bosch Alts have an internal reg - so the old one from the generator can be removed and placed in the 'used parts' box...
