I've got a broken gear that drives my odometer in a '74 1300 beetle.
Any ideas where I can get a replacement or someone that rebuilds them in the Brisbane area?
Thanks.
Don't buy a new one, you can fix the old one.
Slide the gear off the shaft, drill the hole in the gear a bee's pube bigger with a tiny drill, so that it slides back on the shaft and the crack
in the gear is completely closed, then use a small bit of super glue in the crack and on the shaft and slide it back on. fixed!
I just had a gear fully break on my speedo. Got it repaired and serviced for $85. Its not expensive to get it overhauled. If one thing is broken is something else going to break soon?
Thanks for the tips.
Thought of drilling it but my range of bits is not that exhaustive. Have put it back in and shaved the teeth near the crack to stop it gettin stuck
but this means it skips a notch every now and then. Odometer reading is out and it will eventually kick itself off again I'm sure.
An $85 rebuild does sound like a great idea but when I only paid $1200 for the whole car and there are more pressing issues than the odometer to
attend to I'd prefer to get out of it for a $5 part if possible. Do the full rebuild when the rest of the stuff is sorted.
I see you're from Brisvegas. Where did you get the rebuild done?
Thanks,
Arthur
You could try Lionel Otto Instruments 124 Evans road Salisbury. 3277 3888.
I have had them work on my Moto Meter tacho on the BMW M/C, good job!
