Engine cutout in 2 ltr kombi

My 2 ltr kombi just cuts out after an hour on the highway, no spitting or spluttering just stops suddenly without warning. Doesn't do it around town. After a couple of minutes, she starts up again and generally doesn't do it again. My wife was cought in heavy highway traffic and it was pretty frightening. It has become a safety issue and we're desperate to solve it. Are ther any suggestions out there?

Doesn't appear to run hot and only seems to happen if we've been sitting on a constant speed 90 to 100 without any variation for an hour or so. A couple of trips where we've had to work the gears or make a some stops we haven't had a problem.

Dual carb, FI, or aftermarket carbs?
Ingnition, stock/aftermarket?

Might be time for a new ignition coil? Perhaps it's getting too hot and wigging out.
I'm sure others will have more info for ya.

Could be the wire from the coil to the fuel cut out solenoids on the carbies needs a quick clean?

Sounds like something is overheating. If you haven't recently replaced the spark plugs, leads, rotor, points and distributor cap it's probably worth doing even if that's not the current problem (sorry about the pun!). Other than that, the coil may be stuffed as type3lover suggested.

Thanks for all your help. I will give everything a go till I find the solution. When it's found, I'll post it. Alan.. (Change of author, wife Karen) I was the ill-fated driver of the veedub when it died. Bought a new fuel cap with a breather hole and it drove home ok but then again I made a few stops along the way. I think I'll take Al on a trip to Brisvegas with me at the wheel to see if it happens again. It was a bit scarey when it died, sitting on the edge of the road with all the trucks flying by and giving the Komb a bit of a rock as they passed. It has been suggested that if it were electrics, it would have taken longer than a few minutes to cool down and restart. Cioa Karen

My beetle did that ONCE, it is scary. Followed the advice offered here - checked wires to/from coil (both were dirty) and ignition switch. One question, mine was NOT electrical, as the CD/radio did not lose the preset stations, something to keep in mind.
Good luck, this will make drive very consciously from now on!!
