Purple Martin - March 6th, 2003 at 11:15 AM

Hi guys,

I bought my kombi a few months ago and when I cleared out the previous owner's stuff I found this in one of the cupboards. It's been sitting in my shed ever since. Any ideas what it is? TIA!

Mmmmm

The square box with the wiring diagram looks like a voltage regulator.

Could be wrong.

I'll re-phrase that .....

Probably wrong!

Hey guys, thats the bracket that holds the Kombi booster heater fan, the one that sits above the engine on a Type 4 powered Kombi. with relays too mmmmmmmm relays!!!:D

vw54 - March 6th, 2003 at 07:02 PM

Guys..... you never know WHAT i have under or in n around my place.... DONT forget ive been collecting for over 35 years now.... so i have to have a few things.

I was going to get a Split window Kombi a few years ago and modify it ... so hence the Heater...

Beck are you sure bout that .... probally the relay fits a few things but the bracket looks about the right size for the heater...

I used to call the Egg n bacon heaters there cool.

I suspose i should put the heater up for sale... I know that they bring good bucks in the US.. should i learn how to sell stuff on Ebay....

Andy - March 6th, 2003 at 09:40 PM

vw54, Dave Becker is definitely right. Boost fan + relay for late bay Kombi heater boost fan.
Can't find a photo, but that's it!!

vw54 - March 7th, 2003 at 06:49 AM

Yeah i suspose the heater was universal and could be used in a Bay or Split it has a rectangle outlet fit into the stock heater system

The EBERSPAECHER HEATER runs on fuel from the tank... sounds like a space ship dont know if i would trust it or not.

Andy - March 7th, 2003 at 11:16 AM

I agree, the thought of a heater burning petrol, and being fed fuel from the fuel pump scares me, but I suppose there were millions made, and on the US lists plenty of bus owners sware by them for sub zero temps!!
I'm just glad I live in QLD, the heat exchanges make all the heat I'll ever need. Just not when the engine is off.
Oh, I thought when they were installed in Bay's, there was an extra duct running above the tank and entered the cabin below the rear most seat? This would involve quite a but of cutting work.
Andy

vw54 - March 7th, 2003 at 01:21 PM

Yeah not 100% sure on that ducting I suspose thats what happened

anyway who cares about COLD weather in Sunny Sydney.

Purple Martin - March 7th, 2003 at 02:04 PM

Well I live in Canberra, and in mid-winter it gets down to -7c :o

So vw54 (Dave, is it?), can you offer me something that will help me get through the cold months without freezing my nuts off?

Andy - March 7th, 2003 at 05:19 PM

Rug up :D

Do you have the original heaters functioning properly? They are quite good when set up correctly, (but I've never been in temps that cold with them). Also in the beetle they need highway speeds to be most effective as they don't have the boost fan like the Kombi.

amazer - March 8th, 2003 at 09:29 PM

I once drove to bathurst in snow with no heaters. Ended up climbing inside the sleeping bag and driving. Not real safe but effective

Andy - March 8th, 2003 at 11:41 PM

That's gotta take the cake Amazer :o
Even on the MCycle I was never that desperate;)
