beam changeover..
warb - July 30th, 2005 at 04:50 PM

I have set off to put a different beam in the front of the bug... however I have hit a little snag, how do I get past this steering arm, id say I have to remove it... the first pic is the beam in the car, there is a castellated nut there...

the second picture is the beam I want to put in, the circled nut is the one I assume I need to remove so I can get the bar out of the way, I took off the nut but could not get the bolt out, does it come out this way?.. Suggestions?..

if the spindles and steering box are good on the old front end and you are re-using them, you dont have to undo the tie rod ends, just unbolt the spindles and steering box and leave it hanging in the car, then bolt it up to the new front end once it is bolted in. Of course if you are replacing the whole front end then you need to undo the tie rods ends, or take the body off the floor pan (whichever you think is easier). If you are undoing the tie rods ends then there is a tool for this (whats it called? tie rod end splitter or something)

you use a tie rod splitter,or you can hit the taper with a hammer to pop the joint,i know people will say it the wrong way to do itbut been doing it that way for years and am changing my beam myself as soon as i clean and paint the new one

is there a bit of split pin still in there ?

warb - August 1st, 2005 at 01:20 PM

nah, i think i took that bottom pic before i took the pin out and removed the nut... i just dont want to bash it too hard and stuff the thread..

ah ok ... if you get real stuck out the nut back on and bash it with a brass hammer, also try taping the sides, or as suggested just leav it on and take the box off the beam.

I can't see your forum post but I am guessing it is to a tie rod remover. If you use a spliting fork you will damage the boot.

Super cheap sell tie rod pullers for about $20 from memory that work fine.
