Found an interesting article on the T3 replacement heads from AMC
http://www.gowesty.com/cylinderhead.html
Wonder if this applies to the type 4, aircooled heads?
:o

From what i've read on STF and other forums, the casting itself is fine its just the seats, valves guides and the headwork that is rubbish.

Hi

I ran one for years and never had a problem. The problems ooccurs when you dont use factory coolant with distilled water.

Then why not just do that work to your original heads and save the cost of buying new castings?
That's assuming they're not cracked of course :puke

I guess originals would have had at least 20 years of heat cycling and use. If it is a better product overall than rebuilding german ones i dont know.

If it's a '91 model, it's only 14 years :P
But yes, probably hard to judge.

Still interested to know if this also applies to type 4 heads?
Anyone??

When I got new heads for Andy, what turned me off AMC is the fins were much thicker, which appear to restrict a lot of air flow between them.

Sorry i was referring to T4 heads. I'd like to know soon as well, as I will have to have mine rebuilt or use AMC ones :)
