Last week my clutch cable broke on my 1970 Beetle and I replaced it today. I made sure the adjustments were correct and that the cable had the bend in it ETC. I tested the clutch play and the tension was good and it engaged without any issues.

I started the car and heard a slight grinding sound so I turned the engine off and checked everything again. Everything was normal but when I put my foot on the clutch there was no pressure and moved freely up and down insted of the small free play then normal pressure. Now it is all free play.

Has the clutch died or have I mised something?

sorry ,but rip out the motor again and look at the gearbox ,if it has a tube with the input shaft in the middle of it then you need a p plate without the ring on it ...if you have one with just the input shaft sticking out then you need the p plate with a ring on it that the release bearing contacts ..what has happened is you have used the wrong one and it has ground off the spring clips that hold the release bearing on the fork and its flopping around inside the bellhousing ...so basically start again ,while your at it replace the bowden tube as its what usually breaks the cable and they are cheap::beer:beer:beer
