sealed beam lights into later model beetle
DIY-DUB - August 7th, 2005 at 09:38 PM

plz explain, how the hell do you mount the buggers? no screws, clips or anything, and its a 7inch light goin into a 7.5 inch hole so must need something, im betting im missing something simple but will ask anyway

VWCOOL - August 8th, 2005 at 09:55 AM

yeah, good question... I've often wondered this myself... USA cars always seem to have sealed beams as standard... how did they do it, anyone?

BiX - August 8th, 2005 at 12:09 PM

There should be 2 tabs bent back at the 10 and 2 posistion inside your headlight bucket. these nned to be bent down. Try heating them otherwise they may snap.

and use the normal bracket at teh base for the bottom mount and also the chrome ring.

DIY-DUB - August 8th, 2005 at 12:35 PM

so the tabs support the light, how do ya hold them in place? other than hopes and prayers on the tabs? and how the hell do ya adjust them after that?

BiX - August 8th, 2005 at 01:57 PM

you screw through the tabs, this holds them there. teh light is then adjusted using the 2 adjusting screws on each side.

DIY-DUB - August 8th, 2005 at 02:05 PM

i must be missing something, theres no way that you can screw these to anything, theres 3 raised bits on the outer edge at the bits that match up with the tabs, but they point backwards, and theres still no hole in them, is there a bracket or something for them that goes between?

DIY-DUB - August 8th, 2005 at 09:21 PM

anyone else got any ideas??

barls - August 8th, 2005 at 09:27 PM

your talking about the h4 upgrades arent you. cause they just screw to the mounting tabs that are in the guards and you then adjust by the 2 screws fitted

DIY-DUB - August 8th, 2005 at 09:34 PM

how do you screw them in when theres nothing on them to screw into? yes tis the h4's. me thinks having a cam 2 take a pic would help me alot right now

barls - August 8th, 2005 at 09:38 PM

id love to take a pic but i dont have any in the car im driving.in my other one i do but its not a good pic if you look closely at the right hand light socket you will see where the little clips are about

and i

pete wood - August 8th, 2005 at 09:41 PM

Umm, why do you want sealed beams. There are alot more powerful bulbs available in H4 globes. My buggy has 90/130w bulbs. Absolutely awesome at night!

btw, the 4 super oscars help too :D

DIY-DUB - August 8th, 2005 at 09:42 PM

yeah i know about them but the lights themselves dont have anything that could have a screw thru it, and theres still about 10mm gap between the tab and the rim of the light, and yews i have them bent out all the way

barls - August 8th, 2005 at 10:38 PM

i thought the h4 upgrades were a semi sealed beam. any way the ones i have in chaos have a stamped ring attached to the lens which is what attaches to the tabs

BiX - August 9th, 2005 at 08:34 AM

Same here. they are semu sealed beams. as i understand it, a sealed beam unit, the whole glode and reflector are one unit and are replaced. Semi sealed H4 lights are a std replacement and were used in early golfs etc. like barls said. the semi sealed beam unit, is in a pressed steel ring which has the mounting and adjustment screws. this is then screwed into the tabs on the bucket. and a plain chrome dress ring goes over the top.

DIY-DUB - August 9th, 2005 at 01:02 PM

well i think i have dud lights or something then, the ones i have are almost all plastic, other than the bit the bulb actually sits in, and by the description, these are semi-sealed, just without the steel rim with the screw holes and adjusting holes in it

dubbill - August 9th, 2005 at 01:08 PM

where did you get those lights??? not imo vw mayby there from a hyundi vw seald lights r not plastic better option to go with h4's unlessyour on a carrot diet n can see in the dark might as well put some candles in those holes as sealed beams:cool:

DIY-DUB - August 9th, 2005 at 01:17 PM

THEY ARE H4's from the vw nationals, said they would fit, they dont

dubbill - August 9th, 2005 at 01:20 PM

next step take them to your local vw shop n compare vw of that age rarely made plastic units of anything

DIY-DUB - August 9th, 2005 at 01:57 PM

they not made by vw, they r aftermarket things, like all the lights in us, euro, and GL look bugs, well similar anyway

dubbill - August 9th, 2005 at 02:06 PM

stay away from the sealed beams anyway if somethin happend to one ( rock) where would you go to get a match???

DIY-DUB - August 9th, 2005 at 02:30 PM

go get a new set i spose, not fussed, didnt cost me much, i like the look of em, the original light dont work with my plans for my bug

dubbill - August 9th, 2005 at 02:34 PM

from where you dont know what there off there has been soooo much reasearch/technology gone into lighting ova the last couple of yrs its not funny talk to auto bahn they even have a wide variety of lighting solutions best of luck

DIY-DUB - August 16th, 2005 at 03:41 PM

barls - August 16th, 2005 at 04:10 PM

barls - August 16th, 2005 at 07:54 PM

barls - August 25th, 2005 at 06:07 PM

found the solution to your problem mate its a narva part and the number is 72190. they are about 30-40 bucks and its designed to hold the lens that you have. its amazing what you find when looking for parts in a catalogue. heres a pic and link to the right section

im a little confused and would appreciate some clarification.

so if i were to upgrade to semi-sealed units for my '71 bug, id need to remove everything, buy the mounting rings, then the semi-sealed units, the globes and new dress ring? or is there anything that can be used again?

all i want to do is to be able to buy H4 globes that fit properly. the base ring on my reflectors are for the less common H4 type with a full ring base (P45) , as opposed to the 3 tab type (P43t). does anyone know if you can buy new reflectors only with the P43t fitting? this way id only need to replace the reflector and globes, as opposed to everything

barls - November 2nd, 2005 at 05:46 AM

no you can just buy the whole unit as ive done but make sure you get the mounting as well thats what 1st bug didnt do so that was why he was having problems. micks has the h4 upgrades for the common h4 bases you just have to be specific when you ask for them. any problems and i can get you a set thru my old man. the unit replaces the whole headlight assy. and is held in with 3 screws takes about 30 mins to fit so long as you have the tabs

Midlife crisis - November 2nd, 2005 at 07:30 AM

As Barls said, you can use the old chrome ring.

barls - November 2nd, 2005 at 02:18 PM

also the main reason of doing it this way is that they dont offer a really good range of bulbs in the stock base. hence going to the h4 base.
