Bay Kombi stereo hole thingy
DoNkEy - August 23rd, 2005 at 05:29 PM

I am sure this is convered somewhere in the forums but i searched and found little.

What do you guys do when installing a stereo...the hole is too small.

I would prefer not to cut, cause the van is very original.

Anyone got pics of what they have done ..where they have mounted etc???

Cheers
James

how bout moiunting it in the glove box ?

A lot of people mount in the glovebox as said.

Because my van is far from original and I like my glovebox, I cut.
It wasn't the most professional job but it looks the part. I measured up accordingly and trimmed off a cm or so off the top. I then folded to recreate the original inset edge that stereos require to hang onto.
The side was more difficult because the new stereos are only a few mm wider. Again I cut and bent, but I lacked the optimal tools so it wasn't 100%. If you were to look at my stereo you'd see the dash curves in slightly for a couple of mm next to the stereo on the right. If I could be bothered it'd be easy to fix.
Essentially what I'm saying is that if you are careful you can install a new stereo without making things look bad.

Hmmm, my tape player fits in the existing hole perfectly. So ones that fit do exist. If you've already got one, I'd try the bracket under the dash system. I've got a volvo clock mounted that way.

I cut mine with a demil too, not too much is needed for stock din size. The shroud around the unit should hide it, it did mine.....also in my cc, I had it in the glove box. I cut the back out and made up boxed section, then carpeted the whole thing. Looked like a bought one.

As I say, my micro has it in the real dash hole, but that's because it looks like a block off plate when it's off, no display or dials etc., so deters the casual thief. My cc has a very crap looking radio in the hole...for same reason.
