ok.......i really want to change the gearbox oil in my baja, ive got the replacement fully synthetic oil.

i had a mate weld a 17mm bolt end onto a socket which i fitted to the socket wrench and put some muscle behind.........this gave me a snapped socket extension and a very secure plug.

now there isnt alot of room in under there. as ive got the gearbox strap and the engine cage bars comeing back from the torsion bars. and then the frame horns are in just the wrong spot for everything i wanna do under there.

how does one dislodge a very tight and annoying plug?

There is a proper sized hex headed socket that'll do the job.

I used the bolt-and-2-nut method but ended up buying the proper tool.

Maybe a rattle gun will jar it loose.

With mine i went and bout a 17mm hex drove for my ratchet. Normally i pull teh left wheel off and use and extension bar in that way. maybe also give a squit of wd40 now and leave for a while.

I found a 17mm hex head drive, better than an allen key.

take everything thats in the way off - that you can. then weld a 17mm nut to a goodly strong peice of flat bar. from memory i had 6mm thick by 50mm wide by abt 250mm long then jack car up and take lh rear wheel off and have helper hold nut into plug nice and square and firm like. have the arm pointing down under the car. then you get under the unsteady 3 wheeled elevated vehicle and bang on the flat bar the lefty loosy undo way making sure not to dislodge the car off the stands to come crashing down on you.

worked for me on a couple of occaisions anyway. i found the trick was to get the get the flat bar sitting against the plug otherwise your undo turn always tries to turn the nut out of the plug....

antiseize the plug when you replace it and dont leave it another 30 years befor cheking trans oil again. haha

I take it safety boots are optional for that last method!

yeah i sprayed a bit of the WD 40 in there.

ive got a mate with a rattle gun but i doubt u could fit it in there.

short of taking my entire cage off. theres not alot i can do to increase movement.

i might get a better tool made up and try again.

Trust me, go and buy one. about $12 and it also does teh inner control pins on IRS rear ends. si use it for that more than the GB oil.

I use an allen key with a piece of pipe over it. get the plug guts really clean. Once it moves, use a good penetrating spray, there are lots better than WD spray. Wiggle it lots to work it in then wind it out.
