Hi peoples

I have a problem wen the wife gotm home from the shops shwe said that when she put the brakes on the headlights go dim and the gen light glows.
I checked this out and they dogo dim, I checked the stops light they are not working globes are good took them out and checked.

could it be that the switch in the master cylinder maybe be dead and shorting out?

Anyone have any ideas that may help as i will have to sort this out in the morning

Maybe first check all your fuses, give them a bit of a roll to make sure they're contacting properly, poor contacts can play some funny tricks with electrics. The fact that something happens when the brake pedal is pushed indicates that the switch is still doing something, so it's probably ok.

Stop! Apparently late model bugs have no fuse for the brake lights. Neither of mine do, so I have to assume this is so - for at least some later models. You may burn the wiring somewhere if there is a short -- and no fuse, if you keep trying. One likely place for a short may be at or near the master-cyl. switch. I had a dead short here once with a 1970 model and it always blew fuse. Apparently with later models it would melt the wiring instead! If your model has a fuse for the brake lights, please ignore the above!

Marc, It does sound like a short circuit in the brake light circuit - it will most likely be between the switch on the master cylinder and the globes as it only causes a problem when the brake switch is activated... check the wiring where the wires go through the inner guard in the engine bay.

If it is true that the later bugs do not have a fuse on the brake lights then beware of wiring fires!

This morning I went down I checked the switch by replacing it, no go still the problem.

checked the wires from the switch to the fuse box looked ok , So I ran new wires from the switch to the join in the boot, still no luck.

went to the wires were they join in the engine bay Disconnected the wire to the left side light,T hen I had stop light on the rightside,so pulled all the wires out of the left lights and found a bit of bared wire to the stop light earthing out replaced the wire all good.

On the way to take my wie t work the speedo cabel broke, luckily I had a spare.

After what Ace said I checked all the wires I can find for the brakes and none go to the fuse box, so I am going to buy a good inline fuse and put it in
