Turbo advice needed for 1600tp
VWFREAK - October 23rd, 2005 at 03:00 PM
I'm currnetly researching the possibility of putting together a turbo 1600 T1 for a bit of fun.
If anyone has advice on the goodies required, how to do it or past and present problems with this mod, please exsplain. I'm not looking to go crazy
with mods, so the simpler the better.
I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to building turbo engine, so any advice would be appreciated.

Get a turbo from the wreckers, and slap an SU on the side and see how long it lasts! thats the "simple" approach!

Shifty, probably looking for a little more technical info than that!! Problem with SU carbies is, they need slapping in the right place. If you wanted
it to work, I would slap it under the ear and yell at it. Slap it on the side and they just dont do what they should. Does the turbo go on the motor,
or do you simply buy it from the wreckers??
:P Sorry , bored at work and killing time til knock off. Does anyone run an old schhol low tech suck through setup??

Hey Peter. Nice to meet you on the weekend....and live the ghia!
Will ask a mate of mine up here. He did it to a mates buggy down in newcastle.
Is this to be a budget type setup or getting serious type setup?

Neway, deisel turbos are usually not the best choice due to often small and retrictive exhaust housings compared to large compressors. secondly, the
size of engines you will be sourcing from is waaay bigger than 1500cc
I would look at something off a Pulsar ET An older Garret To2. These are not water cooled and would suit the application well.
Same as something off a Laser Turbo or something similar.
Things like garret T25 and T25"s, VG20's and the like and the like will do as well but are too large going to be a bit laggy on a Veedub
For a lower boost application on a low revving 1500, choose the smallest turbo you can find to do the job. This kind of thing can be had for around a
hundred bucks.Try some Yahoo forums for different turbo cars and check out some of the Jap importers.
Your inlet setup will work fine but I would suggest pulling thru a single 45mm SU. Plenty of CFM available from them and there are needles available
suitable for draw-thru turboing.
Plenty of thought needs top go into the plumbing of your turbo manifold tho.
it needs to be easily removeable but tough enough to support the weight of the turbo and carb and cope with heat cycles and vibration. Not a lot of fun
to make. if your not going to fabricate it yourself expect to pay quite a bit.
Ian Swinkels was selling a turbo manifold setup recently at very reasonable price.
If you are serious about doing this job i would buy the manifold straight away with no questions asked.
Ian does not cut any corners with his stuff.I have dealt with him before and can onlr reccommend him.
Plumb a tee-piece into your oil pressure switch port for an oil supply to the turbo and return the oil back to the engine in whatever way it will
go.
Either into the base of the filler neck or even into the tappet cover. Try to get it to go downhill all the way.
Use a high volume oil pump and fit a good exsternal cooler and filter.
This should be enough to get you going. I woul probably say you will get away with stock ignition advance on a low boost setup. If you want to boost
it up, you should think about rigging some boost retard into the system.
You are not going to get any change out of a grand by the time you source/make all the bits you need so dont look at this as a budget modification.
If you are fair dinkum about the turbo road, I would set aside at least a grand and twice that if you are going to get someone else to do it.

sorry, you slap it on the ass, i thought that was common knowledge.

Hey Rueb, at this stage I'll be going for the budget set up. Thanks for that, let me know how you go.
By the way sweet arse ride, can't wait to see her run at hidden valley.

saw this on ebay just after reading this

Would love to do a similar setup on my engine.
I am with bone collector I want a budget turbo setup for a bit of fun :P
Here’s a question lots of people talk about buying turbo headers but what stopping you from running a pipe with an adapter off a normal set of
extractors to the turbo?
And how is retarding of the timing achieved under boost ?
sorry for the dumb questions :thumb

It seems a lot of people are looking into boosting their engines at the moment. I'm also looking at a mild setup for my '71 Kombi, nothing nuts,
just enough power to keep up with (and maybe pass once in a while) modern cars.
I plan on using a set of regular centre exit extractors the running a pipe into the engine bay with the turbo mounting to the left of the centre of
the engine. Oil feed from the pressure switch outlet and returning to the fuel pump (removed and blanked off with a plate) inlet. I have a 45mm SU to
feed the beast and an electric fuel pump from a subaru with a regulator.
I'm interested into converting the vacume advance into a retard if its possible but i'm not sure if its neccary on a mild setup.
At the moment I am also making a SS log manifold similar in apperance to a stock kombi exhaust from outside the car..... to compare with the
extractors.
Maybe the mods could suggest a separate section for this topic as the threads are everywhere and its a constant theme??

Head over to the STF. ALOT of info on pull through and blow through systems. alot of good setups there too
Secoh - October 24th, 2005 at 05:36 PM
I'd never do a turbo setup without EFI and intercooling myself. Inefficient and not the way to longevity of a motor.
If I was to produce a full turbo kit that included everything you needed including a full EFI setup for a reasonable price, would people be intrested?

My ears pricked up at that. I think there is quite a bit of interest in a bolt on FI system at the proverbial reasonable price. Mind you some have
no reason at any price!

Well, just the microtech is around a grand, then there's the fuel pump, knock sensor, regulator, injectors, fuel rail and swirl pot, but there are
other ECU's that are just as able and a lot cheaper such as Megasquirt and a couple of others that spring to mind. So it wouldn't be a cheap kit
but it would be cheaper and easier than doing it all yourself. At least set up as a kit the ECU could be pre-mapped so that at worst all it would
need is tweaking instead of having to be set up from scratch. Just thinking out loud really, because there's no point developing it all if there's
only 2 people that would want it.
