problems balancing wheels after powdercoating?
Anthiron - October 30th, 2005 at 12:34 PM

ive been told that after wheels have been powdercoated there can be issues with getting them to balance again.

has anyone ever had this problem? or have any insight into the matter?

i want to get some wheels coated but if its gonna cause problems ill just paint them.

sounds like a porky started by a dodgy powder coater or dodgy balencer

think about it.

How much can powder weigh??
Lumpy paint would be no different.

People cut rims in pieces and weld on new wider rims and can balence them again

Anything addes to something will effect it.

Now a bent rim........ that is a different matter.

My rims are powder coated and they balance fine and I don't see why they wouldn't. You've been told a porky my friend.

If you get them Electronially Balanced, ask the guys to only add the weight to the inside of the wheels, so it wont spoil your new painted wheels and not look ugly

why would the coating affect them its very even all over the wheels

i was told it was something to do with heat used to do the powder coating? which could warp metal slightly or something. my wheels are steel roh rims with VW centers though so pretty strong anyway.

rightio thanks guys powder coating it is.:bounce

They're baked not fried :)

vw54 - October 31st, 2005 at 11:18 AM

They would have to be FRIED at around 800 degress C to distort

From memory powder coating is baked at around 2 to 300 Degress C

I think it is under 300° C

You can get kits that do it in your home oven - so it cant be THAT hot???

whoever told that story must have been confused with galvanising. It's good for distorting stuff.

ok thanks for the info guys.

the guy that told me is a qualified mechanic/ auto lecci and his father in law, a drag racer, hotrodder, mechanic agreed so its not like it was some junior tyre fitter from bob jane so i figured i better check.
