Hi guys.....

Advice needed on a rear Kombi bearing....

Going round corners to the left at speed, there is a juddering noise coming from the rear wheel. I thought it sounded like one of my cv joints had worn through, so I swopped it with a good one (on the left side - the side under stress on left hand turns) no change? havent changed the right one yet,,,,,.....?

Their is some play in the left rear bearing, but I have not had much trouble with bearings previously and not sure how much there hould be....

Anyone got any clever ways measuring/guessing the amount of play from feeling the rear wheel when its off the ground????

there is a small amount of movement... I am starting to think it feels like to much - is more than another kombi I have... but only just.

In “as new” condition there would be “no play” in the rear wheel bearings.
The inner ball race takes the “thrust”, with the outer roller bearing taking
the “load” play.
Having said that, with “used” bearings, you are bound to get some play.
I have not seen a measured tolerance for this anywhere.
I would think five to ten thou play at the wheel rim would be acceptable,
possibly even more?
I do not think this would cause your “juddering”.

I would be checking your right hand “CV” joints.

How much “lean” are you getting?
Do you have a lift kit installed?
You may be at the limit of the “drive shaft”.

Try jacking up the right hand side body, until the wheel is off the ground,
with the full extension of the suspension, roll the wheel and watch the drive
shaft and “CV” joints.
Look for jumping or axial movement of the drive shaft.

I am assuming you have checked your tyres, wheels, wheel nuts and stub axle nuts??????
