Fairly urgent: semi-Automatic beetle torque converter seal issue
eraser - November 1st, 2005 at 09:04 PM

Howdy all,
I recently had some fairly big work don't on my car basically we will get to the center of it. I got all seals replaced including the torque converter seal. Anyway driving along the car just starts pissing out ATF oil sure enough it was the torque converter seal he informs me he noticed the seal was loose so he put a new one on and again it was loose he said he took it off and put silicon around it and then it fit snug, but from memory silicon and atf oil don't mix at all is this a shonkey deal?

Hi,
This certainly sounds shonkey to Me... there is 52.6 PSI of ATF pressure in the system.... from the ATF pump...
the oil seal should be a tight fit...

I'm on holidays at present about 500kms from home....
there are 2 different sizes of torque converter oil seals -- they changed in middle of 1970 from memory...

the change is at chassis number - You will have to wait until I return home on Monday for the chassis number..
The part number for the torque converter oil seals is
001 301 083 for the early seal
and 001 301 083B for the late seal..\
Sorry I don't know the size of the late seal, but I do have a new early seal at home... I could measure....
One way to tell - the spring is on the outside of the early seal- and on the inside of the late seals...

If You need ATF-oil pump seals - two used on the engine
I have them $20 for the two including post...
I had to buy them from the USA....

those seals are an interference fit, which means they have to be knocked in with a hammer and socket....

They are supposed to be renewed every time they are disturbed... ie. when the torque converter is removed...

I bought My torque converter seal from the USA...
CIP1 plus many others sell them....]

Lee my book lists the following:

From November 1969, Chassis No 110 2 385 384 - The lip of the oil seal was moved
and the chamfer on the neck of the converter made smaller.

with the seal numbers
001 301 083
to
001 301 083A

Is this what you were thinking of?

Yes Grahame,
that is the numbers I was thinking of....
I had that serial number in My diary but wasn't 100% sure it was correct.....
I think that date is the actual date they were made so its a 1970 year model beetle....
I did have a late model converter seal but sold it to someone...
