I am new to VW's and I am not sure what this is next to the gear stick. Its in a '64 Baja.

its a heater tap.it was originally connected to your heat exchangers (part of the exhaust) and opened a pair of flaps that allowed the hot air heated by the exhaust and pushed by the fan on the motor, to travel along the heater channels (mounted in the body under your doors) and out the small vents close to your feet and also the demisters in the bottom corners of the windscreen. clockwise for off, anti clockwise for heat, if it is still connected!

its easy to check if u have heater boxes
u will have these big hot dog looking things on either side of your engine which have tubes running to the heater channels on either side of your
car.
your exhaust would run thru the heater boxes.
i seriously doubt u have heaters anymore tho........the sacrifices one makes to drive a car as cool as a baja bug
