I'm baffled with the chassis number on our beetle. Under the back seat the number is 196 xxx xxx. This number also matches the vin plate in the spare wheel well. On the vin plate it says its a type-19. Its supposedly a 1967 beetle.

I've checked a couple of sites with chassis/year info but can't seem to work it out.
Could anyone give me any info?

Very odd, I've never heard of a type 19. Here is a page with the usual beetle types listed:

Here is a page with chassis numbers and engine numbers for every year. It also has changes described, so you can use it to work out what year your beetle is (for example, if yours has a two-speed wiper but no horn grilles, it's a '67 - assuming these things haven't been changed by a previous owner! )

Australia had unique Beetle chassis numbers for the 1965 - 1967 years, we basically marked time with a 64 Beetle until the 1500 Beetle was released in 1968. The 1 means your car is a Type 1, the 9 means its an Australia only chassis number, the 6 is the year, in this case a 1966 model. Overseas sites will be little use in this regard. Try doing a search on this forum for more information, this has ben asked before.

mate, iv'e got the exact same problem. i posted my numbers on this site and was told that i must have got them wrong, but i have checked and double checked and i can't get to the bottom of it.

Hi kirk, in a previous thread you said "chassis number is...195621768" . According to http://www.mickmotors.com.au/vwchassisnumber.htm  your chassis is first half 65. Read what 1303steve said above regarding the "9" thats probably throwing you like it did me.

Thanks Rob, I reckon you must have a dub from every year :P This site is great, and addictive like the bug. I'm spending MOST of my spare time these days fiddling, tinkering, reading the manuals, dreaming of another dub project and holding myself back from buying another one! 3 cars are already too much for our 1 carport. Although I am getting a weakness for a pop top t2 for getting away from my own traffic jam.
Thanks for the spares offer. The car is complete except for the side mirrors, but it doesn't have the required hinge pins with the thread. I dont really want to mess with that especially as the doors are so nicely aligned.

Your 67 (i just had a quick peek) has mirrors mounted on the door. Do these just screw in to the door panel? One other thing that I might change is to put in retractables to replace the standard lap/sash belts thats in there now, hopefully to the same anchor points. I was wondering if yours had existing anchor points as I recall you had to put in an strengthing plate (or something) for the bottom anchor?

edmond, if moding from the original lap/sash to retraceables...u need to get an engineering cert for them.

And more often than not, u need to strenthen the bottom anchor with a strenthening plate to be safe. There was a thread on it a short while back...will see if i can find it again for u.

Ed.. this site has all you need for inertia belts.. I got mine from here and fitted in an afternoon.. He supplies the plate for the anchor on the floor pan.. He is out Cambelltown ay.. Nice fella.. Ring him.. Tell him its for a bug.. He can ship to you.. I bought Klippans.. Can't remember the length but he will tell you..
