type III motor into beetle, is it hard?
hipichic - November 8th, 2005 at 08:19 PM

I am wondering how difficult it would be to put a type III fuel injected motor in my 1973 beetle?

thanks guys :)

barls - November 8th, 2005 at 08:37 PM

it has to be converted to an upright cooling system but its not hard as they are based on the same case. im not sure the fi will fit in the engine bay im thinking it wont though

hipichic - November 8th, 2005 at 08:53 PM

bummer :(
Thanks for the quick reply though.
I'd love fuel injection in my bug. it's running what we're told is a porsche 914 motor (though that isn't for sure...it seems dodgy, i can't get the case number to match up with anything on the net). it has twin weber carbies on it, but they are far from perfect for the tinkerbeetle (she does fly though...but is a thirsty little fairy!!).

the 914 motor is a type 4 motor basically the same as a 2L kombi. actually it is the same motor with different heads and exhaust. i run a similar motor in my bug and get good fuel consumption like just under 400km to a tank but mine has the stock solex carbys on i. they cruise well at 110km/h

ah cool! good to hear someone has the same sort of setup, do you have any pics of your carby linkage, as mine is shite....looks shocking...mind you it was a rush job as the linkage it had when I bought it was undriveable. We also have a pair of Delorto single barrel carbies, are they similar to what you've got? would we be better off just getting those reco'd and tidy up the linkage?
(i'm sure I could sell these weber DCNs for a few $$$)

barls - November 8th, 2005 at 09:12 PM

mine are the stock kombi carbs. dasdubber, nbturbo and goldie are all running this same motor in different forms. im currently redesigning most of my engine set up ie exhaust and linkage set up. but here is my motor

i forget to mention alex and his brother they both run t4s as well. but if you still want to put FI on it give richard holtz a call at v force i think hes working on a system at the moment. if he can get it running well and produced for a reasonable price even i might convert over eventually

Poor thirsty Tinkerbeetle.... :sandrine

might be wrong, but i'm reasonable sure Alex's car is a type 1, it's a 2332, that's not a common oversize setup for a type 4.

BTW, how close is your car to completion barls?

barls - November 9th, 2005 at 02:22 PM

a few more wield on the exhaust then the air box an the interior to finish

pete wood - November 9th, 2005 at 02:36 PM

sorry to hijack the post, but can you post some pics of where you're up to with the airbox?

barls - November 9th, 2005 at 03:09 PM

yeah 0k pete i suppose i should up date the thread on airboxes

nbturbo - November 9th, 2005 at 04:57 PM

Barls-how about spinning it around and give us a look at those heater boxes-look pretty good in that pic.Love the colour.

yes, she is very thirsty :beer
as thirsty as my old falcon was!
Hopefully we can quench that thirst soonish :S

Barls, We also have a pair of Delorto single barrel carbies, are they similar to what you've got? would we be better off just getting those reco'd and tidy up the linkage??

Thanks heaps for your time and suggestions!

barls - November 9th, 2005 at 07:51 PM

they might be better in a fuel efficiency sense but i have no idea about them. ive only had one experience with a webber and thats a twin barrel progressive. it depends on what size webber you have on there. i think about a pair of 40s is about the right size from what ive read. for the linkage have a look at dasdubbers bug hes running ether webbers or dels from memory. when you say thirsty how much are we talking give us a distance with an amount of fuel

nbturbo there should be some more pics in the thread but only of one side as the other is almost finished only needing the endcap finished being wielded. now you see why i wanted to tidy it up a bit.

hipichic - November 9th, 2005 at 08:04 PM

i get about 250kms (max) to a tank :(
I'd rather put the delortos on if that would be better....then sell off the webers :)

barls - November 9th, 2005 at 08:11 PM

yeah thats is a bit too much you should get at least 300 -350km minimum out of a 40L tank. here is the link for das' car
http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewthread.php?tid=21201
maybe you should ask him about the webbers and which way to go. as i havent had much experience with them.

pete wood - November 9th, 2005 at 08:12 PM

Dare I ask, but how long since you had it tuned by someone who really knows what they are doing? That might help alot. A lot of people with aftermarket bits have never had their cars tuned to the optimum so you might be surprised.

Also I had a stockish 1641 in a 67 bug with a standard 32pict carbie and it did similar milage with the standard 25l tank. You have to remember beetles generally don't have very big tanks. How big is the tank in your car?

hipichic - November 9th, 2005 at 08:19 PM

it's been dynotuned by a mob in bayswater, also my partner is mechanical (mind you, his toy of choice is usually a ford v8)

The tank is a 42 litre.

barls - November 9th, 2005 at 08:29 PM

ive had the sort of fuel economy it was just after i put the webber on the bug i used 20L from cerberus to mornington. id suggest going to the dels in that case and then giving it a tune again.

hipichic - November 13th, 2005 at 07:55 PM

it looks like our plans have changed now... we have a 1600 motor to go into her instead, so we are going to gradually start gathering nice shiny bits for it and it will go in instead, then we'll have much better ecomony and a heater that works!!!
so will have a 914 motor and twin webers for sale in a few months :)

barls - November 21st, 2005 at 03:40 PM

ive been thinking maybe the easier way is to put you in touch with some guys that have an idea about webbers. this is a forum that can help you on the fuel consumption.
http://www.shoptalkforums.com
the heater is easy ive got one in my bug all you need to to is get some heater boxes. im using shortened kombi ones which i made my own covers for and am now plumbing it in to the stock system. for pics see the link in my signature
