New Shocker Required

Hi,

I have a 77 Camper Van, with dead shockers. A mechanic suggesed I go with gas instead of oil.

Can anyone share with me their views on what would be my the best choice? Ultimately I'm after views on which are the best shockers for my van.

many thanks

This is a difficult question to answer dude as different blokes have different strokes.

One set of shocks for one guy ride like a dream and the next guy reckons the ride is like a truck.

Different dudes have different attitude about shocks and the ride they give versus the ride they want.

Gas shocks are usually nitrogen gas pressurised to help prevent aeration of the damper oil and normalise shock operation over a wide range of conditions.

Really high end stuff have high and low speed damping valves and are often externally adjustable.

If you are happy with a stock ride, then fit stock or standard replacement shocks.
if you want to play with your shocks, fit some adjustable dampening shock, Eg Konis.

If you really want to blow your dough, buy yourself a set of something like Spax, Avo, Proflex or Penske shocks in the length and travel you need with externally adjustable bump and rebound dampening adjusters, complete with remote gas reservoirs and have then dynoed to match the resonant frequency of the suspension at each end of your bus!!
These will set you back considerably more than the cost of a couple of Kombis together but think of the conversation peice!!!

Another very real consideration is how much do you want to spend?
For mine, stock or standard replacement. Something like Pedders Confort Gas Or Monro Gas if you aim a little higher.

Horses for courses tho!
