I believe I have a Microbus as it has a complete interior with seats, complete trims, headlining seat belts.

The ID tag says -seating capacity 2


Any ideas??

Congratulations.. You own a Type 2 Microbus 1977 model, 8/9 seater, sliding door left, RHD.. Serial Number 141 2?5

maybe I am a little dim, but if it says seating capacity of 2 how can I legally seat 8

I am asking because (warning non VW content) I also have a Commodore and converted it to a 6 seater from a 5 seater using the factory benchseat and seatbelt mounting points and had to have a modification plate to update the rego details. I would assume that Queensland Transport would only take the deatils from the ID plate and class it as a 2 seater.

Thats a good question.. Aust plates are a bit confusing.. You have a number 227 2 141 235.
the first 3 numbers would normally mean a Type (2) microbus (2) 197(7) model. The 4th digit (2) is a mystery on all models and the remaining 6 digits 141 235 are the serial number of your vehicle.. That would mean you have a standard microbus..

You see above the RHS rivet they have stamped "Transporter 224" which is a rhd microbus..

I know Aust plates wre not consistent with german plates however an excellent reference site is http://www.type2.com/m-codes/index.html  the info is basically the same but the plates aren't the same lay out.. Good luck..

In Australia it could have originally been sold as a windowed van. It should still have the mounting for original seats and seatbelts To convert it to a bus you will need to get all the seating apparel and take it to a transport engineer and get a modification plate saying it can seat more people. As it'a all original you should not have many hassles.
True vans had no seats, seat belt mountings, heater outlets, side cards, roof lining etc in the back.
