Lowering late type 3.. Questions!
jo_tas - December 8th, 2005 at 10:04 AM

Hi all

I got a quote from a VW mechanic to lower my dub... around $300 all round.

Is this a good price?

Also, my car is (still) due for some new shock absorbers, would shortened shocks be a good idea?

I'm planning on 2 splines in the front and 1 in the rear..

$300 sounds reasonable, allows around 5hrs to do four wheels. Does that include the labour to install the new shocks?

For a drop like that, I don't think shortened shocks would be required.

Ok.. the quote doesn't include installing shocks, but i can do that myself.

One question. How much mechanical work have you done and seeing you own a Type 3, how much do you plan to do?

If you have been doing some work on the beloved Type 3, the lowering of the suspension isn't really rocket science if you have the basic tools plus a protractor from a Combination Set. In saying this, I mean a good quality set such as Moore and Wright. Most manuals give a detailed description on what to do and the only thing you may have to do is get a "friendly" machine shop to turn a button which is around 40mm long by the diameter of the trailing arm on the front. This slips neatly over the shock mount. This ensures that the protractor sits on the centreline of the torsion bar and shock mount which is the book datum. The rear plates on both swing axle and double joint aren't that difficult either although you will have to unbolt a couple more things.

Don't forget you must get a front wheel alignment done as the toe in will have increased. It's worthwhile getting the rear checked as well.

All you have to do is set aside a day rather than look at the 5 hours labour you have shelled out and the $300 will get you the shockers.

More importantly, you will have learned a great deal about the mechanics of your Type 3 and soon you will know more than the "modern day" mechanics do about your car.

$300 is a good deal.

look at it like this
Wheel alignment = about $30 then your left with $67.50 a wheel. Hey I own a VW shop and I would take a car to this guy at that price.

depends if they do it dodgey or properly tho...

He's the most well known and repected VW mechanic in Tasmania... he's also a member of the VW club here.

1500s, I would love to be able to do it myself, but lack of tools, space (and strength, lol)

And now the boyfriend is saying he doesn't like the look of lowered VW's, after showing him some pics.
He's the one making the repayments on the car so i have to listen to him...:sniffle:

Tell him that lowering it and putting some negative camber on the rear end will improve the handling and make it safer. It should be easier to sell to the B/F as a safety issue rather than just looks. It also happens to be mostly true.

I think you should get rid of that boy. he is obviously on drugs not liking lowered ones..... or maybe its the lack of drugs...... hmmmmmmmmmmm

jo_tas - December 14th, 2005 at 08:58 PM
