Getting a valve seat out of a head
Chewy - December 20th, 2005 at 12:39 AM

Hi, Im doing some frankenstein surgery at the minute and need ideas on how I can remove a valve seat from a head and not damage it?
Thanks

To remove the seat get an old valve that will fit inside the seat on the existing valve. MIG weld it to the seat and before it cools hammer the vavle steam where it goes through the valve guide to remove the seat.

This is the only way you can remove the seat BUT it damages the seat so you have to fit new ones.

To not damage the seat? Cut the head away around it
Sorry, couldn't resist.....
As Dave said, you will damage them to remove them.

My old man is filing 8 thou from the inlet valve guides so I can shim and press the valve guide in nice and tight. Have had to use quality shim material from a marmalade tin, gold medal marmalade. Should know by tomorrow if it will work after grinding the valve seats.
