I intend to build my own set of headers, extractors as non of the ones sold will fit my vehicle they hit the rear valance.
I have heard that the tubes have to be a certain length, before the collector is this correct.

Welcome to the forum.

There is no golden rule on primary pipe length before the collector, though overly short primaries can affect low end torque. To state the obvious, you want each primary to be the same length if possible.

What sort of car do you have such that no-one sells extractors which clear the rear valance?

There are quite a few here with bigger Type !s and also Type IV engines in split vans (Rob King comes to mind) tackling clearance problems; you might want to recast the topic subject to, say, "Exhaust clearance in a splitter" to suck in the appropriate expertise.

Good luck!
