Hi guys,
Just installed a set of new piston rings on a 67' 1300 engine, and have noticed with the compression rings that they appear to be the right size when
they are off the pistons, but when installed they are not fully fitting into the grooves (yes I have cleaned all carbon out after removing the old
rings!!)
Is it possible that the rings i have got are from a later engine that has a different width / style of ring gap?
A few extra details, compression rings are 2.48mm and the engine no. is E 1098172
Thanks in Advance
Check the piston ring in the cylinder to see if you have teh correct clearence gap
Make sure you have some Ring gap when it sits level in the barrell.
So does the ring sit right down in the piston groove, usually there a up n down side to the rung as well
The ring is sitting up the right way according to the instructions, but is not in the barrel by the looks (no gap)
You will have to file them
You sure that the rings you have bought are the correct size for the actual bore size you have now and not an oversize? Check!
Do a trial fit of the ring into the bore and push it down with a bare piston, nice and square about 25mm down the bore and measure the ring end
gaps.
Do the same for the oil scraper rings.
Dont forget to de-glaze the bores before doing your measurements. A very light deglaze with a 45 Deg crosshatch pattern. Never let the hone stand
still, particularly when the hone is at the top, or the bottom of the bore.
No ring end gap and the ringends will butt when hot resulting in the rign breaking..... at the very least.
At worst........dont even think about it!

Thanks guys. It appears that the rings i was using are 1200 rings which are .48mm wider than the 1300 ones. So looks like ill be off to buy the correct ones!!
