help to build a tough trans for type 4
66deluxe - January 5th, 2006 at 08:29 AM

G'day groovers, I am building a 2270cc type 4 for my 66 beetle and I want a tough IRS trans to handle the power. Here's what i have to use, I have just ordered a Rhino trans case from CB performance, I have 5 transaxles in my shed they are: 66 1300 swinger, 71? AH DSC IRS box, 091 6 rib bus box and 2x 002 5 rib boxes. I plan on getting a late super or L bug box SSP for the stronger 9 tooth 3.78 shaft. I will be using the 3rd & 4th course gears from one of the 002 boxes. If any one can tell me what else I need and what gears and ring & pinion to use that would be much appreciated. Cheers Damien.:beer

You may only need a 3.875 R&P and other parts out of a ssp late L-bug box, and you may prefer the later output splines that come in these boxes to put in your superdiff.
Don't bother with the ?71 box unless the diff ratio is what you want.(4.125)
The 091 first gear can be modified to use with the 002 boxes' mainshaft. It should have the strong mainshaft that you want to get from the ssp box...same part.(3.78, 9 tooth)
And use your 002 3rd and 4th gears.
Weak link may be the output spline size where the CV flange goes on.
I cut off the circlip area and bolted the flanges on with a thick plate.
Using a superdiff, I ran in the 10.7s with these parts in a SSp case.
